Classic Fighters - See You There?

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby K5054NZ » Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:38 am

B) I for one am extremely looking forward to this. Sadly the Spitfire won't be finished in time, but for the first time in three years we'll have a pair of Mustangs together, as well as TWO NEW Fokker Dr.Is, another couple of brand-new WW1 replicas, and of course the RAAF bringing their Caribou.

I've been ridiculously fortunate in that not only have I been able to secure a return Interislander trip, but also a Gold Pass and accomodation for the entire weekend! Woo! I feel blessed.

For those of you going, remember the theme is "Aviation and the Movies", so I expect to see you all in some sort of costume.

So, who's going, on what days, and where/when shall we meet up?

Now, to sort out my Wing Cdr Guy Gibson outfit..... ;)

Yeah....unfortunately the local costume hire place only opens Thursday, and Thursday happens to be the day my ferry leaves Wellington. Argh!!! So I'll be hitting the local op shops to suss out a Howard Hughes suit! Woo! "The way of the future..."

Chopper_nut, will we see both the real and replica Brisfits at the show, or just the authentic example? Mmm....two Brisfits

My numbers are 021994111 and 0273934892, I'll be in touch with y'all over the next few days, first texts are on their way. B) Like I say, I was fortunate enough to get a Gold Pass so I'll be there all weekend. Probably going to get in as early as poss both days. In the words of Steven Tyler, I don't want to miss a thing!

I've decided pretty much at the last minute to drive up for the show. I may go Saturday and Sunday if the weather is ok.

Robin - give me a call when you are in Blenheim. Ph 5729729. It would be good to catch up.

I have a few hangar pics from Woodbourne which may be useful for the scenery and I can also get us onto base over the weekend.

Cheers

I'll be on the Dash 8 into Omaka on Saturday, along with my brother, my father and a friend.

I'm on 021 403 2376 if anyone wants to catch up.

Looking forward to it. Lets hope the weather is kind to us - its miserable in Wellington at the moment :(

Deane, do you know what the access will be like to Woodbourne on Saturday - if in fact there is any access. I'm guessing there will be a whole lot of Cessnas parked there that need an AI repaint of them done :D and the chance, however slim, of looking through a gap in a hangar door for a sight of some RNZAF airframes would be worth the trek... just wondering... would love to see something of the Devons, Strikemaster(s?) or any of the other instructional airframes. (I'm betting that Aunty Helen will be making sure that the Skyhawks will be well hidden though :P )

There is no public access to Woodbourne Air Base.
Yes there will be lots of civvy lighties parked up there, but normally they are parked away from base and people directed.

Actually that is something that really surprised me about Woodburn.

Here we have one of the countries most important air bases, used for training pilots during WWII yet nothing there to actually commemorate its contribution to NZ aviation history.

Heck, I had to make do with a visit to the cafe in a plane cafe down the road...you know the one, that took the UFO footage in the 70's!

Regards

Just for your info - the weather here has been patchy over the last few days. It is starting to get quite cool and strong posibility of showers over the weekend. Dress for temps 15-20 deg and bring a coat or parka. Heres hoping good ole Marlb pulls one out of the bag weather wise.
