Radio Scanners

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby kismet » Tue May 02, 2006 12:49 am

I have been needing an upgrade for a scanner for some time (the one I have is from when I was about 4 years old!!!)

If anybody has one; where do you get these radio scanners?

How much are they, and can you get digital frequency reading instead of analogue?
For any of you that have one, do they recieve clearly, or are they extremely static? Technology has probably taken a great leap since mine was made.

Also for those who live in Auckland, where are some good spots to hear aircraft buzzing the tower.

Thanks
:D

Well, it depends on what you're looking for. I got mine at Dick Smith, and I think I paid a couple hundred for it (air bands are more expensive, the cheap ones just pick up fire and police). Handheld, all digital, and very nice. Takes 4 AA batteries.

As for listening spots, I used to be a regular fixture at the Rwy 23 carpark, windows down, scanner in hand. Wasn't quite as nice when they were landing on 5R, but excellent when landing 23L. Haven't taken it anywhere else local.

Hi kismet,

I have moved this topic to the "real aviation forum" as it is not really to do with flightsim.

I too use a scanner bought from Dick Smith Electronics, made by Uniden: http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storef ... View/D2764

It costs $300 but is well worth it, as it has a very large frequency range, from 25-512MHz so it can pick up just about everything, including armature radio, police, fire, ambulance, trains, marine and of coarse airplanes!

With the standard Arial, you can hear airplane transmitions fine, but I plug mine into my TV antenna with a little connecter that cost $2, and receive much clearer transmitions for further away (Whangarai, Great Barrier, Mercer) from my house in East Auckland.

Going down to the seafront, or up the top of a volcano (there are heaps round Auckland) also is a good place to get transmitions, but my favourite place is the carpark on Puhinui Drive near Auckland Airport, as you can hear all the inbound planes, as well as the tower, and the ground handoffs telling them wear to park.

It was Jarred (NZ1 on the forums) who actually got me into all this, so if you have any further questions, ask him. We both have the same model scanner :D

Check out this thread: http://s11.invisionfree.com/nzff/index.php?showtopic=20 for more info.

Cheers.

The site that contains all the fequencies can be found at the following link:

BTW Andrew, did you get that adaptor from Dick Smith? I would love to get a similar sort of product, the reception here is pretty rubbish.
