Best Water?

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby ardypilot » Sun Apr 22, 2007 2:06 pm

I'm looking to update my flight sim 2004 water textures, and having experimented with many freeware ones (VOZ, Real Enviroment Pro, Bill Lyons), I can't find anything I am happy with- generally because of the OTT reflections each one includes.

Can anyone reccomend me a set- I'm happy to go with payware.

Cheers.

Considering how much us kiwis have to fly over the ocean :D I've found this a great investment Trolly.

Check out Peter Wilding's offerings (through Flight1) - I have them all but don't really know where each starts and ends, I suspect there's a lot of overlap.
Flight Environment e.g. also has multiple water textures (along with sky+clouds etc)

Yeah I've been looking at FSWater but they don't appear to be at all different from the stock fs9 stuff:

Wish I could be more specific, but here's what happens when Ground Environment Pro and Flight Environment co-exist on an FS9 installation:

I use the "dark water" from Real Environment Pro. Mush better then the "Bright water".

I realy think flight Enviroment is the way to go - I've tried the others but keep coming back to FE.

Me too! It is quite realistic in my opinion. When I first installed it I wasn't too sure about it as it was a huge difference to what I was used to but I wouldn't change it for anything now!

well, i was using ground environment, real environment, flight environment, flight 1 water, and my water textures looked damn fine. I think it was the ones in flight environment. I like the dark textures with real environment, but at some times they seem black, which is really unrealistic ;)

ensure that your water settings are on high or whatever. WHen the settings are on medium, it doesnt work properly, and instead of proper looking cloud reflections, you get strange lines in the water (as you are saying).

you could also use BEV (birds eye view ) it is very nice for water and far better than fswater ,also has different season water textures and pretty much you make it the way you like it (it has never failed me ) not counting all the other stuff you can do to the fs planet .

Looks like a new freeware water texture set has been made available on Avsim.

"JazZ Art's Water Environment 1.0" filename: jzwater.zip

Looks OK but reflections might be a bit extreme as well in screenshots.

Cheers

BEV looks amazing Mike- does it work for NZ though, because the website says it is just for North America and Canada?

Also Florian, thanks for the link. I agree that the Jazz Art stuff is a bit OTT on the reflection side.

Hi all,

I'm happy you noticed the JazZ Art water textures :D

I designed them, but have to agree with you that I got a little too carried away with some of the reflections..
Still, Version 2 is being designed right now and will correct that as a few other things..

You mentioned above the clouds' reflections on water:
Actually those clouds are always painted.. at least on FS9.
One ugly thing the FS9 machine does is to strech those textures on the edges and that leads to the clouds appearing as vertical lines pending from the horizon.. I'm sure you already saw that in some packs.
Version 2 already took care of that.
Plus some better blending with the sky at the horizon line and a couple of other small issues.

Anyway, thought you'd like to know.

If any of you would care to send me some screenies of how they look on your systems, and maybe mantioning what you like and dislike in particular, I'd very much appreciate and that would be helpful for next release!

Cheers, ad happy flying!
