Has anyone here done the oil rig mission yet? This is really hard, I can't get the heli down on the catwalk. Anyone figured out how to get the guy on the catwalk?

Cheers,
Christian

tried it a couple of times and also got to the same spot- It took me ages to actually see the guy there so by the time id set myself up to get him the oilrig was falling to bits....

Ill give it another go as well :)

I tried and failed then tried and failed and then gave up, might give it another go.

I wonder how long it would take one of the chopper nuts to get it down :P

hi guys i have completed the oil rig mission several times over and found that the cat walk guy is the quickest one the rescue my method is as follows once you have picked the guy in the high rise you will need to hover fly over the containers while gently decending down in a straight line on the cat walk but be very carefull of your helicopter tail as you very quicky end the mission from a tail strike so once clear of the containers decend untill you have one skid touching the top rail on the catwalk near your man after this the inspector will instruct you to fly back to the starting point of the mission and u will then have completed the mission

A tip: Save the mission at a point that allows you to refly it without going through all the 'boring stuff' (i.e. save just after you touch down on the pad at the rig)

He, he, if you'd see my hover skills you'd know what my problem is :P

Well done for finishing it. Looks like I need to keep practicing my hover. Well, at least I know now what to do in theory. So, one doesn't really need to properly land on the catwalk, just touch the rails?

Good luck to all the others who are also trying!

Cheers,
Christian

Hi Scon

That one is a lot easier than the oil rig one. The hard part is actually finding the boat. If you have a hard time finding it you can actually cheat if you have the the SDK installed. All you need to do is enable the editor and then load the source file of the mission and find the coordinates of the boat. Once you found the boat, the next hard part is finding the second crew member. He's just to the SW not very far from the boat. Once you get him on board the rest should be easy if you have no trouble landing the heli on the oil rig platform in the oil rig mission.

Cheers,

This is what FSX is about, right?
A sort of parallel experience with the REAL flightsim, FS9.
So time to put to the test those skills honed over many hours in the PROPER choppers:
First time out was a bit casual with the urgency thing, and the helipad fell into the sea just as I was about to rescue the hapless oilman.
user posted image
Second time round I just reversed off when Bitchin' Betty said :"Back off! Back off!" and put it straight back down to collect the guy.
(Digression: poor MS, trying to be PC with no gender discrimination.
The broad is on the radio, flicking out terse orders to the guys on the oilrig: "...yadayada, did you copy?"
Comes back the grizzled voice of the seasoned oilrigman: "Yes, SIR!" I almost lost the collective each time)
Off to the highrise, get the dude, down to the catwalk...so who's to know what the rules are?
In RL you would definitely not put a skid onto the railing.
Mission failure.

Now it gets interesting, because MS realised that people were not going to be satisfied with this scenario.
The NEXT time round, get the guy off the helipad, fly round to the highrise, put down...uh uh.
Nothing I could do, would entice the fellow to get on board. Heck I even got out.
He put his pinkies in his ears, and over the noise of exploding gas containers, I swear I heard him say:
"No way! I'll never get in that thing, what with all the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness!"
user posted image
So eventually I decided to leave him to the Coastguard, and took off.
Unfortunately, a bit of stray shrapnel came my way, smack in the fuel tank.
Then it started dawning that this was a secondary level of the mission: falling fuel gauge, a nearby tanker, time running out fast!

Mission accomplished!

NOW: Has anyone gotten round the Red Bull challenge at the bottom of the expert list, in under 6 minutes??

Aced it! In the end it wasn't that hard. I just needed to land on the pile of wrecked helos from my previous attempts. Found a bug too, as soon as I picked up the guy, I had mission success (my engine was on fire and the landing attempt counted as success - despite the fact the rig was going to blow up in my face a few secs later). Made it to the oil tanker, landed, nothing happened, so I continued back to base, all with engine on fire.

Now on to the Red Bull racing and the last two medals (well I actually still miss the more challenging flour bomb ones). Then I can admire my whole collection - I'm such a nerd :P

2:58 minutes!!! :P

Nowhere near the 1:50 though. There is a reason this one is at the bottom of the list!
