Is Milford actually controlled? I was under the impression they just had some sort of advisory service?

It is a flight service station provided by Airways nz (which is where I got this data) and is not "controlled" as such but still has a tower and you still talk to them and a slip is raised etc. So instead of requesting something, you advise them of your intentions and they give information relivant to you but you are still responsable for your own seperation etc etc.
Im not 100% sure of how the system works, I just do what the plane in front of me does when I go in.
It can be very interesting and extreemly busy in there but only at curtain times of curtain days of curtain times of the year. E.g most aircraft will go in at say 1030 am for an 11am sailing of the boats on a fine day in summer, all while fitting in with the local senic flights. In that case its just a game of follow the plane in front and dont hit anything, cos its like yr flying in a cardboard box as opposed to the wide open skys of a regular aerodrome........

hmm sort of but alot more involved, more like a controlled airport (but not controlled) rather than the unicom which sorta sits in the background. Hard to explain, Im sure someone else knows it a bit better than mwa

interesting thing about Auckland movements too is - no circuit traffic. ie no bug smashers racking up 8 to 12 movements in a session. usually each movement in AA is a standalone flight. Plus due to the larger number of heavies operating, there are more delays due to wake turbulence separation requirements.
