Could you land a REAL plane?

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Well if the unlikely situation that I did have to handfly an approach and landing where not CATIIIc ILS equipment is avalible then I would hand fly the approach and do several missed approaches, going around at decreasing altitudes each time, to at least get a feal for the aircraft and the avalible thrust..

But even if there is a CATIII ILS someone has to know how to work the autoflight sysytems, for some that could present quite a challenge, theyr a bit more complex than the defualt jets

I certainly think I would be able to handle a boeing type aircraft, I'm sure all serios simmers would have no trouble with the systems with the awsome addons we have now.

Nothing wrong with a bit of confidence ae B-)

I always land on the grass on FS, so in real life I would have no confidence in myself :(

Flight sim doesnt give you the hands on feel of flying an airliner. I think in real life you would find that with a bit of arsing around the sky, you would come out feeling a bit better. The main thing that fs doesnt give you is the feeling of inertia, g force etc. To a point, its easier flying some things in real life. Much like racing games on the computer, its easier to get a feel for in real life than in the sim.

I went in a moving 737 sim and landed it perfect. Also the flight experience one here dosn't move but I have had lots of free goes on that and can land and do perfect approaches. But Passengers would be worried with a 16yr old flying if the pilots were knocked out. I am sure they would grab someone with a CPL or IFR rating if on the plane. Imagine if your the only one on board with the most flight experience and you land successfully. You would be awarded greatly and be sure to have a job with the airline lol.

hmmm good old sims, lol i once went on one a couple of times...(as well as on the stationary one at Bay flight)

i landed on the first go, but i expect theyd be scaping the cockpit off the runway after my first,... but after the first one, i got used to the controls and was fine and ended u-p doing some 'okay' landings, definetly survivable

Advice for guys going to the flight experience sims around the country, Tell them you know what certain things do on a 737 and ask to do everything. I did that on my flight from NZAA-NZTG and got my moneys woth lol.
Also a free DVD as I saw them advertise one if it's your birthday lol

Good poll. I answered yes. Having a CPL and IR and had a few hrs in the ANZ 777. With full motion and doing circuits etc at NZAA and NZCH. Should have no trouble to land one for real. Main thing is to use th AP to the utmost.
Cheers and Merry Xmas to all.

Very good poll with some quite factual replies.
With my little actual flying experience (5 hours in an AA1 Trainer at NZWN circa 1978) but coupled with
my determination to live a little longer I would give it a bloody good go.
Think I'd chuck the auto on and fly about a bit until the weather is right for landing.
After all if you dont give it a go , what's the worst thing that can happen ?.......Oh yeah !

Ive come to the conclusion that if the need be and anyone of us were on A PLANE WITH SNAKES ninja.gif , no pilots , .. any one in this forum could land a Real airliner , if the person on that plane only happened to be a GEEKY COMPUTER NERD tongue.gif , would contact any or all off of us and plug the plane into one huge MULTIPLAY session were he or she could have 1032 copilots controlling the aircraft into a perfect landing ..... WELL DONE NZFF santa_cool.gif

hi all
flew the anz dc8 sim in the early 70,scant say i did to well with the approach chasing the spooling all over the place and actually putting the dambed thing into the water short of the runway but in saying that the dc8 sim wasnt visual so with limlted instrument time and no jet experience it was quite an experience. So today with a few more hours up my sleeve i think i could maybe get away with a walk away landing provided there was someone in the tower with the right knowledge to assist but would want to keep it up there long as poss to learn what i could before the live or die landing

I was a "No Way" voter....

My FlightSim experience has always been limited to smaller GA stuff and have little or no interest in the airliners, so my landing expectations would be about the same as "a snowball in hell."

I am totally convinced that at my own interest level I could walk away from landing a C152..... thumbup1.gif

Don't know. I voted maybe. I did actually study my PPL about 14 years ago and landed a Piper Tomahawk many times.

Say the pilots were incapacitated and you didn't know the aircraft, it would definitely be handy to have someone talking you down. I think I would have way more chance of landing a propeller aircraft than a jet.
