New Lufthansa A340-500s

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

I have recently traveled on one of the new Lufthansa A340-500's. Great flyer I must say and the interior was quite simply amazing! I struggle with travel (6 foot 6) but there was tonnes of legroom and very comfortable. The toilets were downstairs where the cargo hold normally is, with mood lighting. It was so cool! I travel to and around Europe about twice a year (around 11 aeroplane trips per year) and this has got to have been the best flight I've ever been on! Really amazing! :P

Only thing I could fault them on is their lack of IFE. You don't have a personal screen and the movies they show on the big screen everyone has to watch are quite frankly terrible!!! Oh well, cool plane though!!!

Man, when I travelled Lufthansa in 96 they were the worst airline I had ever been on. The cabin crew, while very attractive  were really snobby and the aircraft was as rough as guts. They hadnt banned smoking on aircraft at that stage and that didnt help. Upon landing, one of the projectors fell off the roof and smashed in the isle. This was an old 747 200 by the way.

Good to hear the 340s are comfy, coz the 744's are diabolical, terrible seat pitch, cr@p IFE, and had a similarly nasty crew experience on two seperate DLH longhaul 744s

I am using LH a lot at the moment, and normally they are very good. They do have problems sometimes, but the good thing is that they normally try and fix things. In flight service seems to be above average and also on their longer flights, the food is ok too. Recently they have been offering some very good fares in Europe, and during their special sales, they are not much more than the 'budget' airlines, with far better service. I flew on their A340s to/from Colombia recently, interesting to go downstairs to the toilets, but I would still choose a 777 over an A340 anyday. Certainly LH are better than KLM, SAS or Air France, so I normally try and find a good price with them first. Even having to change in Germany is not a problem, as they have it well organized.

Smooth landings.

Ive been on a Lufthansa A340s and the interiors are now pretty nice. They have seatback IFE and the seats are really comfortable. The A340's 2-4-2 configuration means wider seats than a 3-3-3 (or worse 3-4-3) Boeing 777. I also find the A340s smoother and quieter, but thats just me tongue.gif

Most of Lufthansa's 747s have terrible interiors; no seatback IFE, uncomfortable seats, not much legroom. At least the service is nice. Some Lufthansa's 747s have been refurbished. D-ABVK (which I flew on before it had be refurbished) now has seats from the A340s which means more comfortable seats and seatback IFE. Unfortunately it retains the same seating configuration so there is still no legroom sad.gif .Can't wait for the 747-8s which will have newly designed seating + IFE.

Oh by the way, Lufthansa has A340-300s and A340-600s but no A340-500s sad.gif
