Hi all!

Yes, very worrying and exciting day. Sorry I can't tell you details of the pilots, Ben!

I've just come back from an evening at Omaka watching a mate take the Nanchang around the patch, and sneaked a peek at the wreckage of this poor lady. Not a pretty sight - starboard wing now has a rather substantial winglet!

Port wheel strut totally broken off, all windscreens shattered, nose oleo and engine gone, control panel forward is barely hanging on. Amazingly, the seats are intact.

I've heard rumours that the crew had the approach chart upside-down and had confused RWY12 with RWY30, and made all their calls for 30 - the *correct* vector, as John was using.

Ah well. Lesson learned, I hope!

There was also an ultralight crash yesterday at (I think) Rangiora, although fortunately no serious injuries in that either.

What's wrong with people in the last few days? tongue.gif

A light plane has crashed in the Urewera Ranges.

The Cesna 152 was reported missing just after 5pm and was discovered a short time later in bush near Lake Waikaremoana.

The Herald understands one person died in the crash and another was injured.

Police, ambulances and fire crew are heading to the area.

Northern fire communications shift manager Tony McDonald said an aviation student walked away from the crash to get help.

Yep a Bayflight 152....I think I met that instructor the other week.

Seems quite a weird crash.....The Herald doesnt know if a Mayday call was received but the guy that survived says 'everything was sweet'.......If a 152's glide performance is anything like a 172's then they would have plenty of time descending from crusing alt....

Hmm, that sucks. sad.gif

Would be interesting to know what happened, seeing as (apparently) there weren't mechanical issues and the weather certainly shouldn't have been a factor. Bit early to speculate yet though I think.

Apparently ANOTHER 152 with 4 POB (I thought they were only a two seater?) has apparently crashed near Ohakune. No injuries. Heard it on the radio facts may be wrong..

Crikey, it's a bad time for New Zealand aviation!

According to the Herald all are safe and well this time, so that's good news smile.gif

Oh, and it reports that it was a Cessna 185

Hehehe a 152 only has 2 seats. It was a C185.

The aircraft was ZK-CAN, usually based at Taupo, if anyone's interested.
