A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Welcome Moriarty,

Man after my own heart. I've also spent a fair bit of time in North Arm and Boyds. Plus rotored into many other places in the North Island. I'm heading into Ruahine Corner later this month.

Using the pdf's - Have a look around the back of Waiouru. There's some nice strips near the Rangitikei River.
Testers are born to fiddle. What does this button do? Oh! Never mind.....

Walked (several times) from El ranch Poronui, Oamaru, boyds via Waitawhero Saddle or Mangapapa Stream, to Tussock hut, Harkenss hut and beyond.
I shall PM you a KMZ file for Gugle Erth listing the huts I have been to over the years.

Thanks for the welcome
While I fly helicopters my love of fixed wing was rekindled with DeaneB FU 24 and his new turbine model.

Hi All,

Finally got my A into G.

Derek is my name, 40 yrs young and aviation is my passion.

Have been simming since the days of the the old Amstrad 6128, flying Chuck Yeagers sim and Mosquito Squadron.

Dream't of flying herc's for the airforce, but as I left school after school cert to work so I could fly and didn't have the qual's to enrol as a pilot.

Been flying real time since 12yrs old. PPL at 16 NZWU and was in the last CPL school the club run in 1985. Flew, trained with and was trained by some of the best.
Ivan Warmington (Idol, Ex RAF, Queens Pilot, Mosquito & Lancaster Pilot), Geoff Matthews (Instructor, Mentor, friend, Aero' s pal, and the only guy I knew who strappped the aircraft to him!), Ian Latham (First instructor, went onto ANZ), John Clark (Instructor, ANZ) , Noel Bamber (Instructor, ANZ), Murray Stewart (Partner in crime in 85' now flying for WAW), Bruce Harding (WAW), Mike Barnes (Flying over in HB), Bob Mc Cready (Awesome Pilot and Flt engineer), Jason Vallely (CPL, Now?), Craig Mc (Pilot, friend, Now running ANZ WU), ROTARY: Ken Walker (One of best Chopper Pilots in NZ until moving abroad), Charlie Anderson (I believe the best in NZ), Ian Wakeling(Rotary Instructor, EX Robinson Test Pilot). The list could go on but I don't want to bore you all.

Haven't flown P.N.C since 95', Wife hates me flying, believes I will suck that big kumera in the sky. Still hold a life time licence, but need a med and re sit law.

Flight simming is what I now do to fulfull my passion.
Have FSX and Acceleration, CH Yoke and Pedals, (trying to talk the lovely wife into a throttle quad)
Haven't work out how to fly online. Signed up but keep getting kicked off. Will work it out.

Look forward to chatting and catching up with you all.

Who's Keen for Ohakea on the 16 march?

Take care

Cheers All

Sim On :plane:

Hello,

My name is Chris, and I am a Yank who lives in Texas. I have lived here most of my life, but got the chance to visit NZ while in the Navy and love the place. I use flight simming to mix two of my loves in life: flying/airplanes and traveling and rarely confine my FS flights to the USA.

My current preferred choice of sims is FS2004, though I am working on building my rig up to handle FSX smoothly :) I also play LockOn:Modern Air Combat quite a bit if I am in the mood to actually make things go Boom! I have been flight simming since the late 90's when I got my first computer, starting out with FS98 and Jane's IAF and have evolved over time to the games that come out.

I fly most anything except heavy metal, never having quite developed a knack for it.

Cheers,
Chris

Howdy Chris, and welcome...
Didja ever get through Janes F15?
Best combat sim ever made, there was such depth in it, wish they'd resurrect it with 21st century graphics.

I gave Jane's F-15 a try, but wasn't impressed. The graphics in their Israeli Air Force release was much better. If you liked F-15 though, you would love LockOn. You can do everything from Air Superiority to Ground Attack to flying a KA-50 attack helicopter, in American (F-15 and A-10) as well as Russian (Su-27/33 Flankers, MiG-29 Fulcrums, Su-25 Frogfoot, and Ka-50 Werewolfs) combat aircraft. The graphics are first rate as is the mission builder.

Hi everyone, I should have done this two years ago when I actually joined this forum. :D My name is Ché and as most of you would have guest by the New Plymouth scenery I am doing, I'm from the naki, yes the home of the rotary milking platform.
I have just finished doing my Batchlor of Visual Arts and majoring in computer graphics. I currently run my own design company called RIDLAND DESIGN which does anything from CGI/animation type projects to Graphic Design and Web Design.

One of my designs which most of you would know of, is the Loony Toons livery for Freedom air's A320, which I designed a couple of years ago now. Last I heard is that is the only Freedom Air aircraft flying around, I think?

My First Flight Simulator was FS5 (wow have things changed since then  ) and found myself liking the whole addon development side of it which fits nicely with me being a designer. :)

Ps: this is by far the most friendliest forum on the Internet! :D

Hi everyone. My name is Sean, and I'm a SimAddict.
I have been for a little while....

My first flightsim was back in the (very) early 80's and have been hooked ever since. Basically if it is a sim, I'm probably interested in it.. Besides flightsims I have car, truck, ship, train and motorcycle sims....

I have always been interested in making stuff for sims, I started by creating a bunch of saved flights for FS2, then got into scenery design with FS4, creating Wellington, Kapiti and the Wairarapa which eventually got uploaded to FSFORUM on Compuserve just in time for FS5.0 to be released <lol> With the new possibilities that FS5 (especially once FS5.1 came out) a mate and I decided to build New Zealand for the new fangled version... It took just over a year but 'NZVA' VFR scenery finally made it up on to the internet (on a scorching fast 14.4k modem...) Around the same time I started building aircraft, using 'Flightsim Flightshop', a radical revolutionay 3d design tool from BAO... First project was the mighty CT-4/B Airtrainer. I was really REALLY happy with it, I mean it even had, wait for it, an opening canopy! I eventually built 3 different versions of the CT4, plus a Jet Provost and Strikemaster as well as a bunch of modifications of other peoples work. It was about this time that I met Deane, who of course realeased his CT4 and made mine look, well, average at best.. about that time I gave up aircraft design and left it to those with more skill :)

Since I have been around FS for a wee while I have an interest in FS history, and a while back I started collecting Flightsims. I have a good number in my collection, going back to MSFS version 2.10 for the PC, as well as subLogic FS2 (MSFS was written by subLOGIC) for the C64.... So if anyone has an old FS lying around lemme know :) (I am interested in *any* sim, not just MS ones..)

My big interest is military aviation, and I got involved in some military VA's, eventually taking over the running of "Virtual Air Command" untill it's closure in 2003 http://geocities.com/60thvaw/ After getting a taste of online military flying with VAC I started looking for something which combined online flying on VATSIM (well.. it was SATCO when I joined) with Military ops. I found the Australian virtual Defence Force, and joined up to fly the F-111. That was 2003, now I am the "virtual Chief of Air Force" with RAAFvirtual http://www.RAAFvirtual.com/

Besides flightsim I am also interested in Simpit building, I have a (very neglected..) TA-4K Skyhawk sim in the early stages of development. A few pics here; http://picasaweb.google.com/NZ6258/TA4KSimulatorCockpit and riding my GSX-R1100 (hey its the nearest thing to flying...)

When I'm not riding, simming or building my 'pit I am probably at work. I work for Pacific Simulators, (with Alister) building simulators.... yep, sims make up a good part of my life <lol>

I have been a lurker on the forum for a little while, loving the discussion, and the 737 repaints :)

Oh, current projects.... apart from the TA-4K Sim. Not much design work going on, but I am traveling around the world virtually... using as many different sims as I can manage. Started in December, and I am as far as Scotland, with the sim count at about 8 I think ;-) If you want to have a peek, there is a bit of a slideshow at http://www.seanandtara.com/

Hello Trolly and everyone, my name is James and I am new to NZFS.

I have been using simulators of all sort on computers for many years. Such as MS Train Sim, Grand Prix racing and I used old time car and flight software on my old 286 and even on older machines in CGA graphics. Computing has always been of great interest to me and I fix all my own PC's. Although I have recently struggled a bit with all the latest PC gear.

Recently my son and daughters have come to an age when they all want to try plane simulators and we very recently bought Microsoft Flight Simulator 98, 2000, 2002, and 2004. I hope to get the latest version (X) sometime in the future.

My real aim is to have fun, learn how to fly, try as many realistic airports as I can in NZ and read many flight pilot books and get my pilots licence.

I like this web site and I am pleased to see it. I have learnt a lot from reading the messages and looking at the photos and movies.
Keep up the good work folks.

Suggestions. Maybe we could have a hardware section (with tutorials etc) to help us learn what are the best graphics cards, memory etc to use with flight sim software as well as a detailed set of web pages showing the various flight sims and what they are all about and what one needs to run them. This could save many of us lots of cash and time and keep us knowledgeable on the subjects.

Hello James, welcome here.
You'll find this forum focusses mainly on FS2004 (aka FS9) with FSX coming slowly onstream.
See this recent pollfor an idea of who's doing what.
As regards hardware, it is a fluid situation because the vendors do not stand still!
Yesterday's hot video card is tomorrow's obsolete graphic interface...
My experience has been that you might up-spec your system aiming for (the quite demanding) FSX, but then find the most amazing performance in FS9 for the first time...
Ongoing discussion pops up every now and then in the Technical Topic, I'm sure you'll pick up some tips there.
