Scooter

Anyone in Nelson Marlborough or Canterbury got a 50cc scooter they'd like to sell? Cos I'd like to buy it...

EDIT: I've found a 2nd hand Yamaha Razz 2-stroke scooter for $650.

However one of Dad's mates can set me up with a new scooter (a powertech Aero, 4-stroke, with keyless ignition, immobiliser...) for $1750 + onroad costs, with free 12 month warranty, and he'll take out the speed limiter and soup it up a bit once I've registered it as a moped, so it'd do a max of 65-70kph. Mum & Dad will lend me the money if I wanted to get this one.

Should I get the $650 Razz or the $1750 Powertech Aero?

A scooter can be much more dangerous than a Motorbike in most cases, but I suppose it depends what you need. Id get like a CRF250 and road register it if I were in your boat- But then im not..

Yeah, but then I'd have to get a motorbike license, the whole idea is to avoid doing that, and petrol would cost more, and all those other costs that I'd be trying to avoid.

Honda CJ1 are one of the fasters old school scotters 50cc that would easy get to 65-70 kph if you disconnect the speedo ,the only thing you gotta worry about on a scotter is the main stand going around corners ,that will pop you off real quick if it hits ..
scotters are safer than push bikes as you are made to wear the right safety equipment,,remember always wear gloves ,you can pick up some pretty nice motocross ones for like $30
the one in the pic above is a real slow one by the way

also dude id stay away from those cheap looking china scooters they are Trouble with the capital T

Yeh mate im staying away from the Razz, most likely getting a Suzuki SJ50 from Chch for $950.

Scooters are realy cool there cheap on the gas and fun to ride,
But like Ben said thay can be dangerous if you dont be carefull when riding them ive almost taken out 4 or 5 scooters in my short time behind the wheel of a car.
Sounds like a good deal for that SJ50 though, ohh yea I remeber when one of my mates rode his scooter in the bowl at the skate park it was realy cool

If you're going for fuel economy and low cost, just get an old Starlet or something off Trademe (Safety is clearly not a factor )

[Hijack Thread]You could copy me and go for an old school Mini (Yes, I changed my mind again!) but you'd have to pay a bit more.

Advantages of an old mini:
1) Cheap on gas
2) They actually appreciate ( You'll make money when you sell it.)
3) They're about the most simple automobile ever built (easy to fix/maintain)
4) Huge cult following for them (easy to find parts)
5) They are AWESOME.
6) They stick like fecal matter to a blanket (low C of G)

If you want my advice dont buy a BNR32 skyline Realiy fun to drive sound great but the gas go's in one end and out the other

Stay away from Chinese scooters: They are junk

Minis, while very fun arent exactly the most reliable.....Only the english could make something so simple yet so complex and so unreliable

Haha yea ive got a freind who has a mini and when ever he drives it in the rain it brakes down
Its due to the engine being placed sideways and the electrics getting wet

Just bear in mind that it is not the cc rating that determines that it can be registered as a moped as opposed to a motorcycle.

Whichever make/model you decide on - in order to register it as a moped ensure the power output is less than 2kw(kilowatts).

The legislation that governs vehicle registration is different from the legislation that governs "In Service" inspection requirements (that's the likes of a WOF if the one you choose requires one).

As Mike says - WEAR GLOVES. Cos guarenteed if you come off by instinct the first thing you'll do is put your hands out.

Yip well I've sent away a deposit on a $950 Suzuki SJ50, will collect it in Christchurch between the sixth and the ninth, depending on when I have free time away from the flying nationals.

Edit: Got dads old motorbike gloves, once I can afford it I'll get some Kevlar jeans as well.

Further edit: Talking to lots of people, it seems that scooters are no more dangerous than motorbikes. The idea is to be able to go 60kph on the flat when needed, and ride in the right wheel track of the lane. Since I'll be doing most riding in no more than 70kph areas then this'll be easily achieveable to be safe.
