C130 Landing stats?

Just a quick and pointless question but I just watched an RNZAF C130 fly over head my house at about 2,000 ft circle round about 3-4 times then headed north in the direction of New Plymouth airport :drool:
Now this brings me to my question :lol: Would a C130 be able to land on the New Plymouth rwy??
For the life of me I carnt remeber the rwy length <_< Ive got my scanner out now on NP tower to see if i can monitor what its up to :unsure: So far all ive heard is a C172 and a Dash 8 (also flew over my house)
Its a shame the only camera i have on me is my underwater disposable :lol:
Anyway that ends my semi pointless post :lol:

Land is one thing, takeoff quite another.
But then JATO packs were invented for just that problem... :wink2:

Sure, hercs can land on short runways. One took off from a carrier once.

Saw Herc 7001 at Nelson yesterday actually, first time I'd seen one up-close before.

Yea I dont know what NO# this Herc was? Only the 3rd time id seen one, only the 2nd time I had seen one in the air though.

Heheh yeah Dad & I were driving back from Mot after lookin at scooters, saw it fly over us on final for 02, was a good excuse for a quick detour to the airport :)

Though come to think of it it wasn't the first time I'd seen a herc - when I was in England driving past RAF Lyneham a Herc flew over top of us, also on final. Wasn't quick enough with the camera though :(

Absolutely and have done on numerous occassions. The first time I saw a Herc close up, was in the 70's when the Queen was out and she visited NP. The RNZAF used one to cart around her entourage. We were even allowed on board and it was a lasting memory for me, as several years later I joined the RNZAF.
NP is 1310 metres long but Hercs often operate out of shorter strips i.e. Alexandra, Waiouru and Wanaka 1200m.

Obviously this is all dependent on factors such as weight and altitude etc. The typical recommended figure for min runway length is 3000ft or about 900m.

Haha yea wish I had my camera, but all I had was an underwater disposable one my Grandma gave me :lol:
It was pulling some realy good bank angles would have made some realy good shots :(

I guess the Hercs are STOL aircraft in there own rights...

They've flown one into Matamata before which isn't exactly a massive runway.

A 737 has also used NP once or twice and Tom Cruise's Gulfstream IV has also being into NP when they were filming the Last Samurai - and presumably other biz jet have called into the Naki.

A learned friend of mine told me that when the army constructed the seal runway at Feilding, they made it strong enough to withstand a Herc landing. Whether or not it would be long enough is another story. I've seen Hercs depart off the grass RWY at OH following airshows when every man and his dog is wanting to head home. Obviously, fully laden it would have been a different story.

737 :drool: How long ago was that? was it a 200 or 300?

Ages ago (hmm I sound like a L & P ad) - 20 years? - didn't see it myself but remember reading an article in the Daily News about an Air NZ 737-200 landing at New Plymouth - I guess it was just to see whether it was okay for emergency purposes - I guess it was lighlty loaded and virtually empty.
