Wanaka Travel

I've left it a bit late, organizing travel arrangements to Wanaka airshow and back next month- what do you guys recommend is the best way to get there?

We need to book 4x adult airfares down there, ANZ are already fully booked into Queenstown, so is an early morning flight into Invercargill/Dunedin feasible, then hire a car for the day and drive up to Wanaka? What are the travel times via car to these places?

Is it worth booking a campervan for the night and staying for both days- if so from where?

Obviosuly the sooner anyone can help me out here, the better. Cheers

found this but camper van might be a better option as accomadtion would be getting far and few between at this stage.

Wanaka is about three hours normally from either dunedin or invercargill in a campervan but given it's a holiday weekend and warbirds I would seriously allow 4 hours travel in total on the roads.

The real question is where are you staying? Wanaka is p[ropbably not fully booked and you could hit Arthurs Point or Hawea Flat camppgounds. Cromwell would be cheaper and maybe not so busy. I would have thought the council will slam freedom campers for the weekend.

Me - I live in Cromwell. Last time I went I took a 350 chev hamilton jet up lake dunstan and the clutha river. took 1/2 an hour to walk up from the river

I could charge a reasonable rate for my front lawn.......

Campervan would be the better option, however I think pickup is only out of CHCH. That makes it a long drive.

I'd personally go for the Invercargill option or take chickenman up on his awesome offer. What a trip!

Chickenman's slightly tounge in cheeck comment. Her of the big stick might not have the same idea.

Ring the campervan companies and see if they have any relocations needed. Quite often you will get people doing a tour of the sth island who pickup campervans in chch and leave them in invercargill or dunedin.

The other option is rental car to queenstown airport from dunedin or invercargill then pickup a campervan in queenstown. Maui & britz campervans hire out of queenstown. Some rental companies will ship a campervan to your destination but you often have to pay a relocation charge.

I pretty much have travel sorted - Wangas-Welly-Chch with Air NZ, then a Cherokee from Chch to Wanaka...all I need to do is get time off work!!!!
