New Plymouth Scenery Update

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Riddlez » Tue Mar 04, 2008 2:27 am

Hi guys,

just to give you an update on how my New Plymouth scenery is coming along.
I know most of you are waiting anxiously for this scenery, and some are probably annoyed it has taken so long, and rightfully so to. :arrr:
I apologize for the long delay in this scenery, the running of my company is taking up alot of my time. I have decide in the last week to get my A into G and get it done in the next fortnight or so. :plane:

This scenery will only be for FSX, sorry guys I converted everything to FSX and never looked back. B-)

These are taken in 3ds max. Sorry they aren't in Flight simulator itself, but I am planing to place everything in to flight simulator all at once.
I have all the buildings and hangers in place. As you can see most haven't been textured, I just haven't had time to apply all of the texture I created on to all the buildings.
Ill have to sit down one day and just texture everything.
The detailed objects around the airport (e.g. signs, fence, small trees/shrubs, markerboards etc) aren't in these shots, but I promise you I will have alot more of these little details in the final combined scenery.
The trees are yellow and green Pohutukawas. These Trees to me are the most important thing in making the New Plymouth Airport truly feel like home! :) These trees are the first thing you see when you fly into NZNP and they have been around since I was a kid.

This is the main terminal building. - Thought I would show you guys this building
I originally started with textures for the main windows of terminal, then I decided to model indents where the window bays are - to ad more detail, then I thought it might be cool to have transparent windows, then I thought "stuff it" I may as well detail the inside of the terminal. Going to have to stop adding detail if I want any frame rates left!!!
But at least you be able to have a coffee at "Airspresso" on the way through NP. :P

I have a question for you guys now.
Do you want me to ad a detailed New Plymouth city to this airport package? The only thing about adding a city package is you have to wait longer for the final package to come out (since I haven't started on the city yet). Other wise the New Plymouth airport by itself will be come out sooner.

Ill post some examples of some scenery in NP town tomorrow, from FSX - namely Paritutu and the Chimney.

Ché.

Think all your fans can't wait - release the airport first.

Have a Coffee before you leave NP :) , we used to have a viewing platform at NZCH , that covered part of the Intl gates and was accessed from the carpark , today it reduced to one third of the size , it was aa plane spotters dream , they should have put a Cafe up there ;)
Che , New Plymouth looking good B-)

Yes, your NP is looking fantastic! My vote is to get the airport out first, without the city. You could work on the combined airport/city after the initial release.

Thanks I really appreciate that. I do have a request from you, what ref photos do you have of looking at the hangers and buildings from the front? (inside the main boundary) some of my photos from the front were taken from 2001 and they didn't let me out to take some update ones.
I see on the screen shots that you did post, that some of the "New Plymouth" signs on the front of the main terminal have been updated since I was last out the front

Look forward to seeing the pics of the power station - with the interest in the airport being so great a while back I was thinking of doing this myself as I took a couple of pics last year. You look like you have it sussed !!
Excellent work - look forward to the finished product

Heres some screen shots of Paritutu and the Chimney sorry Deane I have got the whole power station. :P I have only done these two objects for the New Plymouth city scenery (oh and some ships), but it amazing how much better New Plymouth looks with Paritutu and the Chimney added in.

Gonna reshape Paraitutu to look more like the picture below, not quite happy with the current shape - I hushed it a bit.

I take it you mean you HAVEN'T got the whole power station ?
Looks very good - Are you planning on doing the rest of the station and port, it would look great. Needs some storage tanks etc as well

Yeah I am going to do the whole port ultimately with all the details including the power station, storage tank, wharfs, New Plymouth City etc.
The screen shots Ive posted here are the port in the early development, just haven't had time to do the powerstation just yet.
Probably gonna release the airport first now which will give me time to make a accurate detailed city/port later on. :)

Great stuff Che, I've only been to New Plymouth once but the waterfront looks just how I remember.

Pity it won't be able to work in FS2004 but its about time everyone realised that X is the way of the future, keep up the good work

Great news Che. I was born and raised in Hawera and got to see all the big projects in NP as they were built, including the power station, Maui, Motunui etc. My friends father was a welder on the NP power station project back in the 70's and I got to go through the whole plant - I was only 7 at the time. Unfortunately we could not get up to the chimney on the day I was there, but we did get on top of the boiler house which is close to 200 ft itself.
I have also been to the top of Paritutu many times. A great vantage point.

I have got a Hawera aerodrome scenery which has been on the back burner for a while, so will have to get it squared away. Just need Stratford aerodrome, Norfolk rd and few of the energy projects added an the Naki will be looking good in FS!! A shame we can't get all the photo real covering the area as Taranaki is quite a nice size area to cover.

Currently working on an upgraded "V-2" version of my New Plymouth airport scenery for FS9 using PHOTOREAL buildings.
Its complete,...... just under testing at the moment.
Also currently building NZHA Hawera (about 60% complete), and NZSD Stratford (about 30% complete).

Its good to see you are a naki boy Deane! :P
There was an article a few weeks ago in the paper, talking about the closure of the power station, specifically what they were going to do with the chimney. The paper talked about demolishing the chimney because there is really no use for it now (which would be awesome to see :P ), surprisingly most of the people interviewed in the paper wanted to keep the chimney (as do I). Most people wanted to turn it into a restaurant or into some apartments, I think they should be turned into a giant water slide right from the top to the bottom. Good way to attract tourist to the region! :D

I completely forgot about Norfolk rd that would be a good one have for FSX. :)
