Looks like I'll be attending, seeing as Whitianga is cancelled due to bad weather. Everyone who booked a seat on the Warbirds DC3 for that day were offered seats down to Ohakea as a refund, which I gladly accepted :D

Pretty cool that the warbirds Dak would do that, pretty rare these days airlines definitely wouldn't.

Does anyone know whether the T-9 Spitfire that's due to show is the one that's been held up by US customs - or is it an entirely different one? Is it confirmed?

Yes it is the same one, I suppose that they are ever hopeful that it may get their in time for the show?

*fingers crossed*

would love to see the spitty!

disappointed that whitiangi is not happening.... but excited that I have been offered a seat to Ohakea instead! :) a little more expensive, and a v. early start (dep 0700! :o ) but I think the scenery on the flight to Ohakea will be a lot better than over to coromandel ;)

looks like there is going to be a lot of 'bogan' black t-shirt wearers at Ohakea.... I wonder if I should wear mine ninja styles! :ph43r:

Spitfire downed
5:00AM Sunday February 24, 2008
By Cliff Taylor
The most famous fighter plane of World War II has lost none of its awesome reputation if the reaction of United States authorities is anything to go by.

A Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX, which was to have been the star attraction at this weekend's Mercury Bay Shell Airshow at Whitianga, has been impounded by US Customs - apparently because they still consider it to be a deadly military machine.

The rebuilt two-seater, one of only five in the world, was bought in the US by Aucklander Doug Brooker, who had hoped to see it fly over the Coromandel this weekend and appear at the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow in March.

It would have been the first time such an aircraft had been seen in the Southern Hemisphere. But the fighter has been prevented from leaving the US, caught for the past fortnight in a web of bureaucratic red tape.

"It seems that a plane built in 1943 goes into the same category as an F16 or something. With an exported military aircraft it has to be in a certain category.

"My guess is the same thing would happen with a WWI aircraft."

Brooker would not reveal how much he paid for the Spitfire, which comes complete with replica wing-mounted machine guns, except to say the price was "very reasonable".

The plane is painted to represent the Spitfire flown by American Major Robert Levine of the 4th Fighter Squadron in the Middle East during WWII.

Brooker said he had been a Spitfire enthusiast "since reading Biggles books as a boy".

He was still hopeful the plane would make it for the Wanaka airshow, but admitted it was "getting pretty tight".

Thinking of accommodation down there, can any Palmerston Northian recommend a place to stay? (Looking for something <$120). :)

Fine question! Heck, I'd offer you a bed here, but all we have is a couch......would you like a couch? :D Serious!

Wanganui is only 30, 45min max from NZOH. I'm going no matter what, so you're assured of a ride? Or are you flying into Palmy?

and just some useless info it is usually faster to get in the gate if you coming in from the north through bulls on to tangamoana Road etc or if the traffic is heavier coming from the south(i.e Palmy/sh1 wellington direcction) to go straight past the ohakea show(south sh1 direction)transit lane and come back in via Tangamoana Road, that as I say is usually but who knows might get havy from both directions.

Thanks for the offer/s guys; I wouldn't want to impose. Easier for me to get some accommodation in-town, so will sort that out over the weekend. :)

I'm in Palmy so happy to offer opinions on accomodation.

Don't know if I'll get to the show as the Mrs and family have me booked on Saturday night and I have to head to Wgtn with work Sunday afternoon, but I'm gonna try.
Testers are born to fiddle. What does this button do? Oh! Never mind.....

Thats why you fly in on the Warbirds DC-3... you do not have to worry about traffic or parking! ;)

Last year (at Whenuapai) we had a few NZFF guys meet outside the tower at midday. That worked well; worth a shot this time? :)

Sounds good, although I've just found out that it's my mates birthday patry the night before so getting down to Ardmore at 6.25am might be tricky! Another mates going away party is on the night after Wanaka- why do all the airshows have to be on these same days argh! <_<
