Ohakea Open Day

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Will it be worth bringing a fold out chair to Ohakea/Wanaka? I remember wishing I'd brought mine last show at Tauranga, but I'm guessing there will be lots of static displays to walk around and can't be bothered lugging it around everywhere..?

Maybe have one of the small tripod-type chairs or something similar that is foldable and can fit in a back-pack? :)

We've got some larger chairs lying around, but nothing that would be really convenient, so I'm not bringing one. :wink2:

meh... you youngun's these days, with your fancy folding chairs that fit in your pocket... in my day we had to stand up... 26hours a day! ;)

seriously tho, as I keep trying to tell the ticket collectors when i ride the trains... I spend 8hours a day sitting on my arse... standing up for a while isn't going to do me any harm! :D

Thanks

I used one of those little folding tripod chairs last time at Wanaka - much more comfortable than sitting on the grass or standing, and not too bulky to carry around.

Had a nice drive down from Rotorua, clear weather but not too 'glary', some good views. :)

Spent the afternoon tottering around Palmerston North, popped out to the airport for a quick nosey, and generally mucked around. :P

Will definately catch up with you guys at the tower at midday. B-)

Hi all!

Here in Wangavegas (as apparently that's what the young folk call it  ) Sunday March 16 has dawned beautiful, maybe 3/8 cloud, still as a still thing, and a LOT of gorgeous blue!

I'm rather excited. Next time I post I'll have been to the show! WOO! Hopefully see a few black tees around the base today!

See you there! WOOOOO!

NEWS

After a lead from the Wings Over Cambridge site I went to www.airforce.mil.nz:

"N.B. There will be no C-17 or Spitfire as previously advertised."

So for all you Globemaster fans, sorry! Apparently word is they're STILL on track to appear at Wanaka tho.

Just got back, unfortunately couldn't stay for the whole day.

Weather was fantastic apart from the wind that came up just after midday. Plenty of rotorwing displays and I was very impressed with the Cessna Dragonfly. First time I've seen one of those - very fast.

Also liked the C130 deploying the starbirst flares after a very very steep full power take off.

Managed to catch up with some fellow NZFFers and there'll be some pic's coming no doubt.

For sure, was a great day, I would have liked to stay around for the Red Checkers and F-111 displays, but I traded that off to get home a bit earlier. :)

My pics will be coming up shortly, and others no doubt. :)

This is scary... I'm the first to upload pictures.

Here's a quick taste of what we saw today. These ones are a little oversharpened but I wanted to get them up for people to enjoy. No cropping, levelling or editing apart from balancing the levels and resizing.

I got there a little late (this was my compromise) so missed a bit, but I got photos of most the stuff I like.

I had to put in two photos of this lovely display.

Huey playing firefighter for a short time. They had two separate displays, both involving multiple helicopters, so I was a little spoilt for choice.

This aircraft gave one of the most impressive displays of aerobatics I've seen. Here it is doing a mock 'burn-out' on taxiway Bravo.

It just wouldn't be an RNZAF event without one of these would it? Again, part of the 9-aircraft Red Checkers display, formation aerobatics photography just isn't something I excel in.

And the star of the show, the ultimate "boy's dream". The F-111 of the RAAF... Perform it's first of two dump and burns.

I'm sure we'll see a greater variety of aircraft from other posters.
