WWI Fighter Formation

Post and comment on screen captures from the beautiful game here. Home of the monthly screenshot competition

Postby ardypilot » Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:58 pm

Following on from my Camel at Omaka thread, I concluded my Sunday of simming by putting all the WWI fighters I have installed into a large loose formation and flew around Wanaka, attempting to recreate the airshow dogfight flights seen last month down there.

Of course, these things always look better when played live on your screen rather than static images (so I have included the RM tracks at the bottom of this post for those who are interested), and never turn out as you would expect- I thought I had set up two Camels chasing a group consisting of a Pfaltz and three Dr.1's, but throughout the flight, everyone was jostling for position and it was the RAF who ended up getting chased down by the Jerrys!

Here are six shots from my sequence, 660kb in file size:

Great fun, Trolly!
My repaint of the NZ Camel was never uploaded, simply because of this:

Texture set B3889 for David Eckherts Fabulous freeware Sopwith Camel. I cant tell you much about the Aircraft that this texture set is based on except that it is a Replica based I think in New Zealand. I cant tell you what squadron the markings are based on. The pack contains as additional model that was required to do this repaint properley and which David was good enough to supply to me.

It's the way of things, I came across this a day or two after I'd whipped up the scratch paint.
It uses a non-mirrored model so you get proper textures both sides.
Search the usual places including SOH and Simviation.

You beauty- found it on flightsim.com under the name 'camelmdi.zip'
FS2004 Sopwith Camel B3889. Texture set and new model for Sopwith Camel B3889. They are for use with David Eckert's Sopwith Camel. By Matthew Ivey.

Will be adding this one to the hanger tomorrow, and putting it through it's paces :)

BTW, be sure to get 'sopwith_camel_n6812.zip' from avsim, featuring a far better replacement prop texture and photoreal fuselage!

Let me present to you: B3889 over the Coromandel- I have neglected flying here since I purchased Real NZ Wanaka, but this colour scheme looks great against the rolling green photoreal hills:

This got me thinking, back in the early 20th century, what sort of locations could the Camel be found flying? My WW1 knowledge is terrible, but I'm guessing the Brits used them over France/Germany to fend off the axis' advancement?

...oh yes, and that brilliant virtual cockpit I was talking about deserves a mention:

After three days of solid sim flying this old vintage "low and slow'er", I am still finding it remarkably fun to fly. Not many addon aircraft manage to entertain my attention span for such consistent timespan, so I thoroughly recommended the download to those who have not tried it! >buck<

EDIT: Whoops, just noticed from my screenies that I was yet to replace the prop texture with the new one that came with the n6812 zip!

The Camel entered service in 1917 .. operated from , well paddocks in France .. never really got to Germany , more the entire front stalled at the and stayed their , there were bulges , at wars end had shot down more enermy aircraft than others during the war . I no a little , this subject would be more Zac,s domain :)

Get someone to give the wingtip a push:

Although I don't remember seeing this at Wanaka- but thats how the Tiger Moths were 'taxiing' around at Ohakea a few weeks ago.
