Seems like a great buy for $2 grand..
Apart from the k's, does anyone see anything else wrong with it?

Probably a pretty obvious thing, but I definently wouldnt buy a European Car with that many km's.

Should be mint, Pugs are a good solid car with pretty good manners in terms of handling and ride comfort.
I'd get it checked over by either the AA or a well known service center first due to the high K's though
Could be in for a sweet deal though mate

Why do you say that? Wifeys Golf is creeping over the 260 000km mark with no major issues. Gets over 1000km's a week on it with her travelling to work/Uni in Hamilton.
Not kidding when I say that parts for it (OEM, not cheap repro's) are within 5% of the price for a similar year Corolla.

Same goes for my Alfa's... Both are in excess of the 200 000km mark, one was a track car for 8yrs. No issues with either of them, and again parts are cheap :)
Its a commonly held belief that may have had some truth in it during the early 90's, but the truth is that there is negligible difference between Euro's and Jappa's these days.

Looks like a great choice to me. High km NZ new isn't so bad as imported high km. At least check the car has a service record across those km and you should be better off. Looks a nice car!

If someone's got a bit of money going spare - how's this!

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/C...6.htm?key=49307

BMW 735iL (stretched version), long range fuel tank of 90 litres!!

Current bit $800 with reserve not met. Would be hella expensive to run (filling the tank with 91 would be close to $160!!)

Do it!

Why's that? Dad's Merc ML270 CDI is still running sweet after circa 260,000kms. I would much rather a European Car over a Jappa.

I've always thought of Pugs as old ladies cars (Well I guess I have 2 old crazy auntie that drive them) but this one actually looks decent with wheels+exhaust+kit, plus it will be reliable, safe, and not too fast. I'll definitely be getting someone to have a look at it.

Time for a loan from the bank of Mum and Dad :D

Its between the Pug, or this.

LOL anyone who fills a tank like that with 91 deserves to suffer poor economy!
The Old Man in-law picked one of those up a couple of years back... comfortable, little bit hungry (a 3.5 petrol, hauling around a bee's dick less than 2 ton... makes sense)
Traded it on a 2 door 3.5 Pajero. Better fuel economy (just) but far less room :(

One with 200'000 k's should be fine, although Beemer parts (+service) can be pretty expensive...

Possibly its the hot weather here in Australia. The Euro cars we have had always seem to stall in the heat etc..

He might've been referring to the one I suggested, which was indeed a Beemer (though not very realistic to say the least) ;)

Lol. Are you paying for it with your own money, or are you having it brought for you? If you are paying for it, atleast youve got some ground in arguing that its the right thing to do. If theyr paying for it, well, your _ _ _ _ _ _

Well I have nearly enough, but sadly the 'bank' won't give me a loan for the rest of it.

I know how you feel mate. I really do. Try greasing up like hell and see if that helps. Works for me sometimes

yep ...high mileage European = $$$ in repairs and unreliable - would never touch one again after having two nightmare Europeans with a lot lower mileage than the 406 you have linked.

Whats wrong with Jap cars (and some Korean cars arent bad now too) anyway? Just read a comparison test with the new Nissan GTR beating the Porsche 911 Turbo (and its half the price) - other comparos from my massive collecion of car magazines (comparos from Wheels, Car etc):

Accord Euro is heaps better an Audi A4 2.4 (twice the price of an Accord),
350Z pulvarises the Alfa GT
Legacy 3.0R equals a BMW 330 but is nearly half the price
A Mazda 6 is better than any equivalent sized Saab or Jaguar
WRX STI thrashes the VW Golf R32 & Audi S3

Yea there is some nice Euros out there but I think you really need to buy new if you buy European as reliabilty can be a problem if they are S/H - possible exceptions are VWs & newer Skodas (basically VWs underneath) but I woudn't touch any of the more expensive German brands and anything from Italy or France.

There is some excellent Jap cars out there particularly from Mazda, Honda and Subaru.
