What he was saying though Daniel is that a Q400 is not, in fact, very similar at all to a Q200/300.

It's like saying ANZ should have got A340's instead of 777's, because an A340 is the same as an A320.

Oops Sorry!
I must have read it to fast :P

Essentially that was what I was saying.

I was also saying that the fleet commonality argument isn't a very strong one for two reasons:
    * they're not that common (the Q300 and Q400)
    * if Air NZ was interested in commonality, there's a chance they would have gone for the ATR 42 over the Q300 (the ATRs are actually pretty compatible)

What I mean is that they would have chosen the ATR 42 instead of the Q300 when they were first deciding what to replace the Saab with.
Not that they would get the ATR 42 now or anything.
Reading that post again, even I can't understand quite what I said, so it's ambiguous and confusing - sorry.
Hopefully this one explains what I meant better.

Originally, I've always thought that the Q400 was the best, most logical and most likely choice.
Now I guess that either the ATR or Q400 could be good choices.

I doubt that Mount Cook would get Embraers - sure it would be nice, but I don't think they'll expand internationally and I don't think the ERJs are that well suited to NZ.

Both the ATR and the Q400 have their good points and they both make sense.
From a spotting point of view I think I'd prefer the ATR - more variety ;) .
Actually from any point of view, I'd like to see the new ATR.

Cheers
Anthony

I doubt Air NZ (Mount Cook or Mainline) would ever get the BAe 146 now.
They have a reputation as a fuel guzzler with a high CASM, both of which Air NZ doesn't really need.
The cost outweighs any potential benefits I think.

E-Jets are more likely than the BAe 146.
It's very unlikely that Kiwijet would get off the ground and bring BAe 146s to our skies.

DJ use 737s now and maybe E-Jets in the future, so NZ would be more likely to get E-Jets than BAe 146s in my opinion.
More likely than that is a turboprop order.

Currently the noise limits at NZQN are being breached by the jets (I assume) so bringing back the BAE146 into that more sensitive environment would be useful - would bugger trans tasman though. So even as a gas guzzler it would probably still suite the greenies. What's the seating capacity of a BAE146 vs an ATR72 or Q400?

What's noisier 737-3/8 or A320? or ERJ?

Hey Guys,

Off Wikipedia...

BAE 146-Between 70 and 100 depending on the model normally (Max 128)
ATR 72-Between 62 and 74
Q400-Between 70 and 78

I highly doubt that they will get BAE 146 because it has had some major problems eg Fumes in the cabin.
Mount Cook have already operated it many years ago.

Also Ansett operated some a while back, they just burned a bit too much fuel (That's what dad says, he was a training captain on them so I guess he'd know :D )and cost a bit much to maintain. I don't think they actually make them anymore, and I can't see Mount Cook buying used planes.

They don't. They went out of production circa 2003 I think.

Okay hot off the press - decision is due 23rd July - see here. $20 that the q400 (next gen version which has just been launched) gets the nod.

Really do hope it's the Q400! Love to see one in NZ skies. With the fuel prices the way they are, I'd be totally shocked if they went with an E-jet though. They'd have to have rocks in their heads.

ATR .. funny their history in NZ , gone the Origin 200 the early ANZ ATRs .. So many choices in the mid 80s , I was more the ATP , but Dan Mitchell pointed out the few problems regard its short field capability , my ideal type and pointed out was an uprated Dash8 ninja.gif .. It dosen't matter who guessed right or wrong .. thing that is wrong is the IDIOTS in POWER do the revolving door policy ...

Turning into a gambling thread tongue.gif
I won't make any bets because I don't want to loose money laugh.gif
I do however think that the Q400 will probably be chosen-much to my dissapointment.
I really would like the ATR 72-600 to win. ATRs are awesome thumbup1.gif

If I were a gambler, which I'm not, I'd also bet that the Q400 will get the nod.
As much as I'd love to see the ATR to be replaced with the ATR 72-600, i think the Q400 will win.
At least this gives me an excuse to take some more ATR flights thumbup1.gif - before they get replaced.
