A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

I was at Tauranga airport yesterday and was surprised to see an American regisetered Kaman K-max.

Really strange chopper - single seat built for hauling big loads - intermeshing twin rotors - ... see here for more info on it. I guess it is here for logging work.

I took a photo with my phone but it didnt turn out very well - Ill try and get a decent shot of it with my camera sometime.

The K-Max doesnt have a tailrotor either. Great to see in action though.

That's interesting, any idea if it will be registered here or is it just on loan?

Ive heard from reliable sources that the K-max is registerd to Columbia Helicopters in the US. Probably wont be brought onto the NZ register.

Aha, that was the same company that owned that big Boeing helicopter that was here a while back (the thing that looks like a civilian Chinook - sorry, don't know my helicopters very well!)
