Brainfade on the Glacier...

What was supposed to be an enjoyable flight from Franz Josef to Tekapo today turned into a disaster not long after take off! The worst part about it is the accident that resulted was my own fault. It was sheer stupidity and it should never have happened!


It began like any other flight on my NZ tour...it was a great day for flying as we left NZFJ


Then the problems started when I decided to head UP Franz Josef Glacier one more time for a look around.

I was watching my airspeed all the way up and the 182 was handling the climb very well...however when we neared the top I took my eye off the ball so to speak. I was manouvering around and looking at the scenery more than my gauges when suddenly I heard that sickening stall warning To me it was like the alarm going off in the morning....a big wake up call...only with the snooze button nowhere in sight! I realised quickly I had nowhere near the altitude under the aircraft to avert an accident so I just braced...


Sierra Kilo Yankee came down with a thud and started to slide slowly down the glacier...fortunatley it came to a stop not far away.


Battered about and with a few cuts and bruises I sat in the Cessna for a short time to try to get my wits about me I was very very sore but realised that I had been very lucky too! The aircraft was in quite a mess...the damage to the underside of the fuselage was extensive. I would have alot of explaining to do.

I was greeted not too long after by a rescue helicopter which took me to a hospital near Mount Cook for treatment. My plan with the Kiwi tour from here will depend on how quickly I am fit enough to fly again. I need to be in Wanaka by the end of the week for the Warbirds airshow ...It would be a shame if I have to miss out on the Tekapo leg altogether.

I wonder if anyone is going to let me fly their precious aircraft after this complete show of incompetence?

Well they're not unused to this sort of stuff down Mt Cook way, so they have access to the Right Stuff.
No problem!



And, if you're going to continue to fool around in the snow, might one suggest the Right Equipment?

Great shots Florian. Were you climbing to fast? or the engine not at full thrust?..
Keep up the great screenshot, preferably without crashing

Cheers guys and yes, in the end I pitched the nose up too high and she ran out of airspeed....I was looking out the side window not paying attention to my flying. So the crash was genuine

@ Naki - Perhaps we can come to an arrangement in terms of price

@ Charl - Very good advice mate! btw, where did you find the Mount Cook Porter?

It's the FSD model, and I think its one I painted!
But know there's a better one out there...

Unfortunately it has. 25 October 1993 a GAF Nomad ZK-NOM did exactly that into the Franz Josef Glacier and killed all on board.
