And introducing "The Spirit of FSF":

First leg. 5:40am Wellington Airport. The first leg of many. I wonder what adventures await as I climb aboard the Spirit.

Today's leg is a dry run. We're going up to Auckland, so I'm still within the safety of New Zealand.

Leg One - NZWN - NZAA Distance 267.7nm

QUOTE
Auckland Airport (IATA: AKL, ICAO: NZAA), previously Auckland International Airport, is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand with over 12 million (some 7 million international and 6 million domestic) passengers a year, expected to more than double by 2025.[1] The airport is in Mangere, a western suburb of Manukau City, and is 21 km south of Auckland City centre. It is the central hub for Air New Zealand.

Auckland Airport is one of New Zealand's most important infrastructure assets, providing thousands of jobs for the region, and is the country's second-largest cargo 'port' by value, contributing around $14 billion to the economy, and catering for over four million visitors each year, resulting in a 70% share of New Zealand's international travellers.[2]

The airport is the second largest in Australasia in terms of high-yield international passengers, being a third larger than Melbourne Airport in terms of international passengers.[3] The airport has also been rated in the top 3 worldwide for airports handling 5-15 million passengers annually. [4]

It has a capacity of about 45 flight movements per hour,[1] using a single runway. A close by taxiway was upgraded for use as a runway when the main runway requires maintenance or for use during emergencies,[5] but it does not have sufficient separation distance to operate simultaneously with the main runway. In November 2007 work began on a new northern runway, to be built in several stages and to be used mainly by smaller airplanes, freeing up capacity on the main runway.
1.

2. Lined up next to other GA aircraft, their pilots probably still fast asleep in bed

3. Holding short: An early morning Qantas flight has just landed:

4. And we're airborne!

5. Turning onto course. I find the plane very easy to handle:

6. Farewell Wellington. We'll meet again, don't know when...

7. Not long until we're in the clouds:

8.

9. Good morning Mr Sun:

10.

11. NZAA:

12.

13.

14. Auckland!

15. Parked up ready for the next leg:

16.

Hope you enjoyed the first of many legs to come!

I've got one leg left to do on that NZ Tour. lol I really should fly that just for closure

Leg 2 Auckland New Zealand, to Norfolk Island (NZAA - YSNF) 590.1 nm

7:53am Local Time

QUOTE
Norfolk Island (Norfuk: Norfuk Ailen) is a small inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It and two neighbouring islands form one of Australia's external territories.
A very long flight. Encountered turbulent weather north of New Zealand. Vectored onto the VOR approach, runway 4 at Norfolk.

01: Fueling up at Auckland

02: Korean Air landing as I get ready to depart:

03: Let's go:

04: The international terminal is a rainbow of liveries:

05:

06: Intercepting the course to Norfolk Island:

07: Kaitaia: New Zealand's northern-most city. The last New Zealand settlement I'm going to see for quite some time:

08: Nearly at the end of New Zealand:

09: Feet wet:

10: Well and truly leaving my homeland behind:

11:

12:

13:

14: Lots and lots of water:

15: Yep there's only so many ways to make shots of water interesting ;)

16: Land! Norfolk Island:

17: Oh the runway's gonna be like that is it?

Gently ease down to the lip of the canyon before diving to the runway, and pulling up for a gentle glide:

Haha, that would have pissed me off to seeing my final destination looking not as expected, after a long flight like yours- and I would have properly been so distracted that I'd crash landed into one of those cliffs- well done on pulling off a decent touchdown!

In a way it makes the end of a long boring leg just a little more exciting ;)

Leg 3 Norfolk Island to Tontouta, New Caledonia (YSNF - NWWW) 434.0 nm
Take off 14:03 local time

Leg 3, and another long over water route. Once we're away from the Pacific islands we should be able to do some VFR shorter hops :D

In the meantime, we're heading North from Norfolk Island to New Caledonia:

QUOTE
La Tontouta International Airport or Nouméa - La Tontouta International Airport (French: Aéroport de Nouméa - La Tontouta) (IATA: NOU, ICAO: NWWW) is the main international airport on New Caledonia, serving the city of Nouméa. The airport is located in the municipality of Païta, approximately 52 km northwest of Nouméa. In 2006, 415,813 passengers used the airport.
01: File my flight plan, tune my radios, fill the tanks, and I'm off:

02:To get out of this canyon I'm going to choose the best angle of climb speed:

03:

04:

05:

06: Turning onto course:

07: Climbing to cruise altitude:

08: 2.5 hours over water. Not very exciting. To give you an impression of the flight, look at this screenshot for two hours ;)

09: Such a welcome site: the dry land of New Caledonia:

Leg 5: NWWL (LIF), Ouanaham Airport (Wanaham Airport) to Lifou to NVVV PORT VILA BAUERFIELD

Departure Time Local Time: 16:39

As shown by the map, I decided to do a little sight seeing, and check out some volcanoes. Seeing the sun low on the horizon, I do some quick calculations and decide that I'll get to my destination just as it is getting dark. I check the weather report en route: light showers, 27 degrees. No problem. Let's go for it!

01: Definitely an hour and a half of daylight left:

02: Let's roll

03:

04:

05: hmm that sun is sinking faster than I thought it would:

06: ... a lot faster...

07: And these don't look like "light shower" clouds:

08: It's getting darker and stormier:

09: I see flashes on the horizon:

10: Lightning forks into the sea:

11: A massive flash behind me. I decide I need to land at the nearest airport, NVVW, White Grass Airport, which is on the island of Tanna, and on my way.

12: It's definitely too dark to do any siteseeing anyway:

13: At least I spot some civilisation. I hope they have somewhere to eat:

14: White Grass Airport

15: It's dark and there are no lights:

16: Dodging trees in windy weather makes for a rough landing:

17: But we get there. Time to power down, and resume the leg and sight seeing in the morning~

Leg 6: NVVL White Grass Airport, Vanuatu to NVVV PORT VILA BAUERFIELD, Vanuatu

Departure Time Local: 06:00

I wake early, and head down to the airfield in the dim glow of pre-dawn. I am to resume my trip to NVVV since it got cut short last night.

QUOTE
Bauerfield International Airport (IATA: VLI, ICAO: NVVV) is an airport located in Port Vila, Vanuatu. The airport is relatively small in size, but its runways have the capability and length to accept jets up to the Boeing 767s. It serves as the hub for Vanuatu's international airline, Air Vanuatu.
01 The weather isn't much better than yesterday, but flyable:

02: Perched on the runway:

03: Airborne:

04:

05:

06: A touch of lightning ahead:

07:

08: The clouds thicken:

09: Visibility is low, and I decide to request vectors to the localizer:

10:

11 The localiser is bearing 080, even though the runway is 110, because of the hills surrounding the airfield. This requires a right turn at the end of the localiser to turn onto the runway.

12:

13:

14: Glad I'm not doing this in a jet! 767s land here via this approach:

15: That is very close lightning!

16: WorldAeroData.com says "Trees penetrate apch and dep slope. Trees up to 100' tall infringe both sides ofrwy. Care rqr dur ldg/tkof with cautious use of wheel breaking." No Kidding!

17:

18: Cold and Dark

I really enjoyed that leg! Thanks for watching!

I don't know if it's Active Sky, but the lightning would usually be on the screen for about half a second or so ... long enough if you have your finger poised on the screenshot key ;)

That said, for every one I got, I missed about 5

Thanks Trolly :)

Just a quick report; the leg wasn't that exciting or noteworthy:

Leg 7: NVVV to NVSS (PortVila Bauerfield, Vanuatu to Santo-Pekoa International Airport, Vanuatu

QUOTE
Luganville is the second largest city in the Republic of Vanuatu and is located on the island of Espiritu Santo. The population is 10,738.
I decided to do a bit of siteseeing and toured some of the islands, as shown by the flight analysis:

Leg 8: NVSS - AGGK

01: After all the clear days I've had to do this leg, I choose a rainy day:

02:

03:

04: Two hours over the ocean:

05:

06:

07:

Leg 9: AGGK to AGGH (Honiara International Airport)

I decide to make a late afternoon hop to Honiara so I can stay in the capital for the night:

QUOTE
Honiara International Airport (IATA: HIR, ICAO: AGGH), formerly known as Henderson Field, is an airport located on Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands. It is the only international airport in the Solomon Islands and is located eight kilometers from the capital Honiara.

Control of the airstrip was the focus of months of fighting in the Guadalcanal campaign during World War II.

Henderson Field was named for Marine Major Lofton Henderson, commanding officer of VMSB-241 who was killed in action at the Battle of Midway while leading his squadron into action against the Japanese carrier forces thereby becoming the first Marine aviator to perish during the battle.
01: Fortunately the weather cleared.

02:

03:

04: Sun is getting lower

05:

06:

07:

08: I spot the airport out of the left window. Oops, I'm a bit high

09: I use flaps and landing gear to bleed speed and altitude:

10:

11:

12: And look who I'm parked up next to:

Looks like a great trip, pics are brilliant. Nice having the route screenies too. Looks like I'm gonna have to spend some time in Vanuatu and the Solomons too by the looks, some neat wee strips huh? Keep it up Coffee

ps - had to laff about the Norfolks Island approach.. the 1st time I flew there was in FS2002 in a Convair580 tour I did of the Pacific, as I approached the island I had trouble spotting the strip coz the whole Island was pretty much underwater except for the runway, I guess global-warming is hitting the Pacific a bit harder than expected ;)

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement! Soon I'll be out of the Islands...getting a bit sick of water water everywhere :) Next hop takes us to Papua New Guinea. From there, it's up through East Asia!

Leg 10 AGGH Honiara Airport -> AGGN Gizo Airport

QUOTE
Gizo with a population of 6,154 (2005 estimates), is the capital of the Western Province in the Solomon Islands. It is situated on Ghizo Island approximately 380 kilometers west-northwest of the capital, Honiara, and is just southwest of the larger island of Kolombangara. Gizo also has a small paved landing strip on the east side of town, making it relatively developed compared to other settlements in the general vicinity.
01: The Australian Airforce plane has slipped away overnight

02: Take off

03:

04:

05: I find the air quite turbulent, and find maintaining straight and level flight a challenge

06:

07: Distinctive Island grouping. Probably the rim of the crater of an underwater volcano

08: Rich volcanic soil for wild forest and jungle to take route:

09: Kolombangara. The name roughly translates to "Water Lord"

QUOTE
Kolombangara is an island in the New Georgia Islands group of the Solomon Islands. Almost perfectly round in shape and about 15 km across, the island is a stratovolcano that reaches an altitude of 1,770 meters at Mount Veve. The island forms part of the southern boundary of the New Georgia Sound; to the northwest the Vella Gulf separates it from Vella Lavella and Gizo, while to the southeast New Georgia lies across the Kula Gulf.
10:

11: And there's our destination: Gizo Airport:

12: A flyby with Kolombangara in the background:

13:

14:

15: Powered down with the mighty "Water Lord" in the background:

This is the route so far:

As you can see, we are just hopping out of my fairly isolated home of New Zealand. You wouldn't think we're actually meant to be headed Eastward! This is why very few round the world trips come past New Zealand. We are just getting to the part where our exit and entry into New Zealand will part ways, and it will feel like we're making progress towards a circumnavigation :D
