Wow - love the Phantom & the B-17 - whats the heli engine - 7th one down?

Last Pic , ball turret , .. WW2 , most survivable place on a B17 .. worst place to be if require belly landing .. 17s ball turret did not retract , if battle damage jammed the turret as it was electric and bomber serverly damaged , many op'ed for turret to be unbolted .. and dropped ...and if the plane belly landed if they got the gunner out in time would break the Fortress's back .
As for the Tail Gunner , he was in the worst spot , this was the later variant with some lateral side , ball mount , early chyeanne mount was very limited with horizontal movement .

Not sure it's a heli engine- I'll ask Dad when he gets home.

That would have tio be a mighty big chopper! Its a Pratt & Whitney, I think the R4360 turbo-compound engine, as used in huge planes like the B-36 "Peacemaker".

Awesome pics Tom! Love that Loach - wait til chopper_nut sees it (same with the Invader)! Great to see the size of the Toom compared with a person too....massive aeroplane! Nice to see the MiG too - is that an Se5a nextdoor? And interesting to see that the Mitchell noseart is blonde on one side, brunette on the other.

And no ropes around the "exhibits". Superb!!!!!

Nice pic's vac.I can remember when I went to the point cook raaf mueseum in Melbourne seeing a f-4 there so huge its hard to think how they got them on board ships
