Just like the 'rock' terminals at wellington eh? tongue.gif

Edit: Found a quick blurb about it on TVNZ website...
TVNZ wrote:Confirmation Christchurch's iconic Wigram Airbase is closing early next year.

The land and airbase is owned by Ngai Tahu Holdings and is currently subject to a plan change application so Ngai Tahu can proceed with residential development plans.

The airforce will continue to run the Wigram air museum.

With the New Zealand Flying School there, I was going to be doing everything there. It could change alot for me.

Its a great place, really not good to see this happen.

Thanks

It was on TV3 News, said the DC-3 and other aircraft are likely to move to Ashburton...The last (and only) time I saw Ashburton airfield was when i was down there 3 or 4 years ago watching my brother race Ministocks for the Canterbury championship, and aircraft were doing flyovers right over the track (maybe..70ft or so), the Airfield was right behind us, didn't look like a big place from what I could see though. At least not big enough for all of the aircraft at Wigram to go to.

I think Christchurch Intl is already pretty much full with GA aircraft too. Not really anywhere else to go, apart from Rangiora, which has only 2 hangars I think, and a small grass strip.

Rock terminals... residential developments...white powder at Whakatane... what is happening to New Zealand's airports? sad.gif

That's real confirmation then isn't it?
How... disappointing and unfortunate.

I believe they are going to leave the tower and hangars in place, as they are classed as historic buildings. Very sorry to see the airfield go, but I don't really think it's surprising - they've been talking about this for years. Just be glad that Paraparaumu isn't going the same way, which it easily could have.

Ashburton has a great little Museum to tout , and runway suited for the Dak , Southern Air has there own hanger there for it .

The amount of shows and displays i have attended ... the open area used by the Model Aviation Society , the flight training , flyins , the warbirds , the hangers the tower are to stay .

It all should be kept up and classed with historic buildings and airfield included .

You're wrong. They'd fit easy. The AAM is probably NZ's best aviation museum (after MOTAT), and the society responsible for the DC-3 (The Southern DC-3 Trust) are building a hangar for their DC-3 next door. Donations for the 'Superhangar' as it is called can be made at the link above.

Well like I said, I didn't actually have a good view of Ashburton from where I was sitting. Plus I wasn't really there to watch the planes happy.gif

Forest Field? Heck, so that's what it's called. I remember going past there a few times on my way to my Brothers farm, only way I realised it was an airfield was the lamposts marking the runway were coloured white, and there was a HARVARD parked in between some trees. Haven't seen it there since though, not sure on the number, but I think (from memory) it was the Harvard with the red tail and wings... May have been one of these two, or another in similar markings

I don't think there's a petition yet.
I guess we could set up an internet petition, but they're useless as far as I'm concerned.
Much better to actually circulate a piece of paper and get some real signatures.

Although I'm not sure if much could be done if the land's already privately held now.
I guess you could try and stop resource consent going through or talk to the environment council for that area.
