Some Queenstown

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby Charl » Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:40 pm

Since I was rummaging in the Queenstown box, thought I'd share these recent shots.

As you can imagine, I came back and had another look at Peter Lohr's NZQN flightsim scenery, and it is very good.
I will no doubt come up with a Real vs Sim pair...
A couple more of the McKenzie basin, an impromptu tour by Qantas, of which more later.
Airport at top right in the first one:

Nice shots mate clapping.gif Thanks for posting
As for QF's Tour of ZQN it is part of the approach I think.
They overfly slopehill then do a big turn around in the area before landing (this is what we did when I went in on QF)

Cool pics Charl, nice and snowy.
Nice to see the 737 and the A320 too.
Also good to hear that the scenery is pretty realistic - thumbup1.gif Peter Lohr.

Boy this is a buzzy little airport in the holiday season!
They cart 'em in by the truck, erm, Boeing, load

When Andy took me up in the Pitts, we were stacked at the holdshort, number five for takeoff!
See here for a feel of the traffic:

Well when you live in a tropical place like Auckland... laugh.gif 18 deg today, this would be midwinter then?

Well it's been 10 years since I visited Queenstown, I couldn't believe all the stuff going on around there!
The Convair followed us in from Christchurch incidentally, lovely plane.

ZQN goes nuts this time of year. Ski packages from OZ coincide with school holidays. This is a picture from three years ago with 5 jets on the tarmac and an ATR on finals.

Wow lots of traffic for ZQN there smile.gif
Is it like that through the whole ski season?

I believe not, the school hols both sides of the Tasman compound the issue.
What also struck me each time I was at the airport, was the rotorwing traffic.
There's maybe $20 million visibly tied up in those, and they shuttle up and down incessantly.

Probably fairly busy during the whole ski season, but the holidays would make it worse.
That's why whenever we fly anywhere we try to time it not on the school holidays or other really busy times.
Can be a bit cheaper that way too, which is good thumbup1.gif

Love those winglets by the way wub.gif

And also winter festival which is before the holidays and quite a few package tours after the holidays . The christmas break is just as busy as well. Rumor has it there is consideration of night landings on the RNAV approach being considered with the installation of lights.

You're right though the number of egg beater movements is amazing, especially when they are doing mountain bike runs up the remarks. Anyone who knows Queenstown will concur that the number of GA flights in and out especially helicopters is pretty hi. I love it first thing in the morning when there are all the milford flights heading out, it's like a huge convoy.

Places like auckland and christchurch are pretty cool for commercial and international flights but I love ZQN for the diversity of traffic in such a tight space. Best place to watch from is the top of peninsula hill.

That would be interesting if they did that.
But is there any point of having night flights?
Would anyone want to arrive after 5pm?

I thought there were noise abatement issues at Queenstown that resulted in curfews and other limits?
Wouldn't night flights be totally the opposite to noise controls?
This will annoy the NIMBYs smiliz2.png: if it goes ahead pirate.gif
I can't see them being very popular either, except maybe for business travellers who need to be somewhere like AKL all day and then get back to ZQN or something.
