They said it looked like the rivets gave way as it wasent ripped in any other way around the area it was a clean line around one area where the part was missing and people on board only heard a crack ,there should be some footage on BBC world website and more of the story there

I read about this on PPRUNE and Airliners.net.
One story I read made it seem like the pilots lost control, and "plunged" 20 000 feet - which is just standard operating procedure.

It's just the Media thinking they're Einstein when they really aren't. Anyway, must have been a pretty rough ride for the passengers. BBC says the plane was at 29,000ft when the decompresion happend, so I think that's where the media might have thought it 'plunged' down to 9,000ft. Could have been poor maintanence, an explosive, the oxygen tanks, rivets gone etc. I guess what countc is the passengers are safe and sound.

An interesting situation. There are two layers torn away - the first is the wing fillet fairing (probably fibrglass) and the second a hole in the aluminium pressure hull. This could occur if the fairing tore off and pulled a hole out of the fuse via an attachment point or if something caused the pressure hull to rupture and it burst out taking the fairing with it.

well the media here in oz are saying that the aircraft has got a history of corrosion. so that could be an explaination, i guess we will find out in time
