Basic Question from a newbee

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Phil » Sat Aug 30, 2008 5:19 pm

Hello
I'm very new to flight simming and this forum. I'm enjoying flying light aircraft around NZ with FSX on my PC.
Having gained a PPL many years ago but, not being in a position to maintain it for some time now, I find myself enjoying simming BUT a little frustrated with the bland look of most NZ airports. Last night I downloaded and installed "Ardmore" from AVSIM. Considering it's shareware I am very pleased and have parked up my Mooney in one of the 3D hangers. However I would be very happy to spend a few dollars on some Payware. Looking around I can find little NZ scenery designed for FSX or am I missing something here? The "FSX Collection" for $88 and the Rotorua Tauranga pack ($22 I think) both look good and will soon join my collection but is there more??? Will 2004 stuff work on FSX? I doubt it but ...
I look forward to some direction please. New_Zealand_etc.gif
Thanks in anticipation
Phil

Yep the Godzone FSX collection looks like good buying, that's quality scenery. I think it comes with Rotorua and Tauranga??

some fs2004 stuff that i have tried (freeware) will work but there is an issue. trees appear with black squares surrounding them (as if there are designed like a square with a tree texture on top and invisible edges. i think the invisible parts turn out black) apparantly on fs2004 trees etc just spin to face you instead of being 3d so there are lots and lots of black boxes around. im looking at the godzone stuff too. real nz wellington looks great!

If you are keen on getting your New Zealand up to scratch, definitely buy the FSX Pack (all of Robin's work is top-notch), download the land-class (helps make NZ a bit greener winkyy.gif) from here. There are a few FSX sceneries around NZ as well, check out NZFF Maps for a map showing where you can find FSX scenery as well. wink.gif

Another idea would be to visit ARNZx to download some repaints for the default FSX aircraft. smile.gif

Just one clarification -- the FSX Collection includes Rotorua and Tauranga.

Phil's original post seemed to say that he was looking at the FSX Collection plus Rotorua/Tauranga -- I just pointed out that Rotorua/Tauranga was already included in the collection.

The FSX Collection:
* Wellington International Airport
* Paraparaumu Airport
* Woodbourne Airport and Airforce Base
* Omaka Airfield
* Picton Airport
* Rotorua Regional Airport
* Tauranga Regional Airport
* Lake Rotorua floatplane base
* Picton Harbour & floatplane base
* Wellington City and waterfront
* 10,000 sq kms of photo scenery

Crikey that's about the price of a single new aircraft release these days.
Bargain of the year...

Thanks Guys
That's not a bad collection of very useful information in less than 24 hours. I've already ordered your recommendations (might suggest the family contribute some $$$ towards them for fathers' day)!
