Air NZ Holidays Wilco/FT Repaint

Discuss aircraft addons and repaints for Flight Simulator here

Postby kleinjakob » Mon Sep 08, 2008 12:31 am

Hy from the other side of the world!

I'm Jakob from Austria/Vienna and I'm a real friend of NZ, so at least in my sim, I like to fly around the kiwi islands. I haven't found a repaint for the Wilco/Feel There B737-300 in the ANZ Holidays ZK-FRE paint scheme, so I started to paint my own. As the Paint Kit which is provided is very very basic I have to do nearly everything by hand, so I thought I'll share with you as you could give me some hints to make it perfect.

I know there is the great repaint by Dan for the vistaliners model, but I thought it would be nice if you could use ZK-FRE with the W/FT panel without the need to do merges...

Critique always welcome...

Some days ago I started first to redraw the logotype and icon:
(I think the type might be an approx. 70% vertically compressed "Venus URW Light", but as I don't have this font nor want to spend $20 on it I simply redraw from pictures)

As you see I started with the first leaves:
I draw them in Illustrator so I have them vectorized, for easier modification and maybe later reuse

Today I nearly finished the flowers (or palm trees?) with just the 2nd top left:
Here are some photos of ZK-FRE in Vienna, sadly this will never happen...

More pictures at: Photobucket Album

I'm waiting for your comments, I'l keep you informed and will upload as soon as I am finished.

Servus from Vienna,
Jakob

It's really cool to see someone from so far away that flies in NZ. Awesome repaint too! You've got quite a skill being able to paint the font etc all by hand!

Well at first I want to thank you for your kind words but to be honest, with the right tools and some knowledge how to use them its no magic. And today it is a lot easer than half a year ago when there was virtually no visual material of ZK-FRE available,...

Back to the plane:
Today I finished the 2nd palm tree (thanks to a post over at Dan's Vistaliners repaint I now know its a palm tree!) and added the notches in the leaves, corrected a bit the emergency exit border, removed the first port and the first 2 on starboard (12/11 resp. in forward group left). and changed the lightmap respectively.

I want to thank the photographers who shared their pics on a.net for reference and to the painters whose textures where a great reference to me.

Here are some of the last pics

For more see the updated Photobucket Album

Jakob

P.S. as I just reviewed the pics when uploading, I saw the TM after the logo is missing, I will add it tomorrow!

Paint looks good buddy BUT if I were you I would redo the windows as the Wilco ones are quite frankly awefull and I think the wrong size (too small) but that might be me as I never rated the product for its external model anyway laugh.gif

Dan, thank you for your input, I will have a closer look at some pictures to get the window size right. And you are right I only like to fly this plane, not because its a beauty, but its the inner values that count! I also have a merge between the external much better Vistaliners 733 in your repaint with the WFT panel, but generally I don't like merges because it becomes confusing after a time...

The next days I'm a bit occupied by university but after that I will do my best with the windows (and maybe I will do a better paintkit).

Greetings, Jakob

(By the way the file is accepted and available under: Avsim.com)

Dan, thank you very much, I will also have a quick look at your repaint, which also had been great help with the details of the leafs,... Hope to hear there's hope out there to have an nice -FRE outside and the great wilco panel inside. smile.gif

Is there a way to have the Wilco VC and Vistaliners exterior, or will you only get the Wilco panel? (With the merge)

A very nice paint job Jakob. I have a problem with the textures not showing. I suspect this could be a Vista thing as the VC on other repaints are missing their textures too. I wonder if anyone else has had problems with the 737 and Vista?
Cheers

hey i had that trouble too it was the texture folder name was different than the on on the add to cfg file.

[fltsim.x]
title=FeelThere Boeing 737-300 ANZ Holidays Wing
sim=B737-3A00A
model=wing
panel=
sound=
texture=ANZ_FRE
visual_damage=1
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=

i changed it to ANZH

or rename the texture folder to ANZ_FRE

hope that helps smile.gif

First I want to apologize for that inconvenience!

I must have forgotten to change the line for the fltsim.x.txt when extracting from one of my "development" folders, since I had several of them parallel to see the texture changes instantly in FS9. Well, yes the solutions given by dazza28 are correct, I also wrote to the avsim library managers to change the uploaded file,...

So please excuse this mistake,

Jakob

NZ225, in FS8 (and FS9, since FS9 uses the FS8-Aircraft File MDL Structure) the virtual cockpit is hardcoded into the same .MDL file as the exterior, so if you change the exterior you also change the VC!
Read: With the merge you can only have the 2D-Panel of the W/FT (which is really worth its money)!

For FSX it is a bit mor complicated, FSX has introduced a new MDL format for aircraft, which supports seperate exterior/interior files. But most developes still hardcode their VCs into their exterior MDLs. So it is theoretically possible in FSX.

If you are interested in the merge I can give the link to the site from where I've got it.

Thanks for the fix. All is well now. In saying that my biggest problem is getting stability on Vista. Numerous "Flight Simulator has stopped working and has to close " Messages. And not enough memory issues. I guess there are plenty of answers around the net which might shed some light on the problems I'm having.

Thanks
Peter

Hey Jakob,

I've only just come across this topic so a bit of a belated reply.

You have earned your sleep : this is an AWESOME repaint clapping.gif !! I live in Auckland, not far from NZAA, so I see the real thing fairly often. I even travelled on it a few years ago when it was still flying in its Air New Zealand livery. Great Stuff !! Und sehr sehr vielen Dank fÜr deine Arbeiten !

Cheers,
Emile.

Hey Jakob,

Forgot one thing in my initial reaction. You wouldn't have a thumbnail picture for it somewhere, would you ? That way it would look so much better when I go to select the aircraft in FSX - it would sure stand out.

Thanks a million,
Emile.
