Pilot Critical After Chopper Crash

A 49-year-old pilot is in a critical condition at Hawke's Bay hospital after his helicopter hit power lines and crashed this afternoon.

His Robinson R44 helicopter crashed on farmland north of Napier, just after midday.

A Hawke's Bay hospital spokeswoman said tonight the pilot was in the intensive care unit in a critical condition.

It was earlier thought his injuries were not serious as he had been able to communicate with his rescuers.

Eastern districts police communications manager Kris McGehan said police were alerted at 1.15pm when the Heliworks chopper failed to return from a 12-minute spraying mission.

Search and rescue teams found the helicopter about 2pm on a farm near a swamp.

The local pilot was the only person on board, Ms McGehan said.

A Lowe rescue helicopter spokesperson said the pilot hit a wire while he was spraying.

Police, the Fire Service and St John's staff helped extract him from the wreckage.

I can't tell if what you said is what you meant as it was quite hard to decipher your grammar but the pilot of the R44 that crashed near Napier is Chris Mansell, a 49-year old rescue helicopter pilot who has rescued hundreds of people over the last 5 years. Hardly a bad pilot..

Yeah this could have been many of reasons lack of power to climb over them /bad mapping before the job/ up draft /down draft/ weight ,not sure if that had a bucket that could of hooked it ,,so bad pilot is a little harsh and until the cause is known i wouldnt like to hear or say that kinda stuff ,as there would be alot of users here that will jump down your throat being friends of chris and would only hope he gets better soon and they find out what has cause it to stop others falling into the same trap ...
hope he comes though ok from his injury's and so far he is a very lucky man to have been able to get outta that alive ,,our thoughts are with you thumbup1.gif

Maybe you need to look at the Rules and Guidelines again. Down the bottom:

That's obviously why there was confusion.
