Wireless Internet Troubles

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Stumpy » Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:52 pm

I am having trouble with my newly installed wireless internet.
A few years ago I got a 'DSE USB 2.0 802.11g WLAN Adapter' (USB wireless) I have no trouble what-so-ever getting the internet running, infact I'm am typing this on the machine with the wireless.
Anyway my trouble ais when I restart my machine the setting sort of wipe and I cannot type them back in. The box I type them in (i.e. *network name* properties, box name wireless internet) disappears. The only way I am able to get back online is to insert the disk and overwrite file. Then I have to retype everthing.
Anyone have any solutions. I am out of ideas.
The pen works fine and has in the past, purchasing a new one is out of the question.
Thanks in advance
James

Are you using the firmware that came with the hardware to control the USB WLAN stick, or the windows software?

Try out using the stock windows XP (need at least SP2 I think) software and see if that helps a bit.

Can you tell me what the 'DSE' model number is? It should look something like 'XHxxxx' ie. XH8344...

I just downloaded the XH8344 drivers from the DSE website... just do a search for XH8344 and you'll find the 'Support Data' page for the adapter.

After installing that, Windows automatically detected the stick, and I just used the builtin Windows Wireless Network Connection setup... If you look under Start icon_arrow.gif Settings icon_arrow.gif Control Panel icon_arrow.gif Network Connections, you should see "Wireless Network Connection".

If you double click that, you should get the status window pop-up and there should be a "View Wireless Networks" button, click that you should get a dialog titled "Choose a wireless network"... if you don't see any networks in the list, click the "Refresh network list" option under "Network Tasks" in the top left hand corner.

Your network should show up (Assuming you have not hidden the SSID), and if you double click it, it should ask for the network key (assuming you have set it up for WPA security)

Once connected, Windows should automatically remember everything... so even if you restart it should automatically find and reconnect to the network.

Ok I think I have sorted it out.
I'm not sure but I think the config utilites it came with was trying to start on 'RaConfig' instead of 'zero configuration.' Although I set it up manualy through windows 'software' I had a play around with the Ralink utilities and noticed the wireless only connected through 'zero configuration' I think it created a profile automatically in 'RaConfig' causing it to boot through that so I deleted it and I just did a reboot without having to reinstall drivers.

I can't tell for sure if the drivers HCP suggested worked, but always best to be on the latest drivers (for most things)
Thanks alot

Yeah... I looked at the RA Utility thing and it has the option to use RAConfig or Zero Config... go with Zero Config as that is the builtin windows one and (surprisingly) actually works!! smile.gif

Glad you got it sorted...
