I might be a bit behind the 8 ball here but I was at Welly the other day and noticed that all the ANZ and Qantas 733's had their eyebrow windows paneled over, does anyone know the story behind this?

Yeah they've been like that for a year or so. Must just be easier as it's one less thing to worry about with maintenance. The new 737NGs are built without them.

They removed the eyebrows as they were a safety thing in the 70's or something and were no longer needed and were becoming a costly, needless feature.

Also to add on is that SJB has had its engines painted back to white

Yea, as others have alluded, the 'eyebrow' windows were a requirement to fulfill a role (improved visibility out of the cockpit = smaller chance of air-air collision or similar) that is now done by a TCAS system. The later 737's acquired by Air NZ didn't have the windows at all.

Bad light and moon light in the cockpit too i found same with 72 but never flown

other captains have said to me the light coming through the windows is bad in a pilots eyes especially at night and when i flew in right hand seat 737-200 sun was bad got a hot back ha ha but each to there own

The 737 eyebrows inherited nose section tooled from the type367- dash 80 or commonly the 707 , as with the fuselage , used on all Boeing types up to latest 73 include the 717/C135/720 s and mid range 727.

I noticed tonight at Auckland also that two of the Air NZ 737s have lost their "pacific waves" on the fuselage.

Sorry to say the "Pacific Wave" is no longer applied to Air NZ aircraft when they are repainted. It is no longer part of Air NZ's brand characteristic.

Hey, what do you know! I never noticed that.

So what are they going to use in place of the pacifc wave then? Coz without it, their aircraft rival Air Post as far as most boring looking livery goes.
