PAUANUI - 30cm p/pixel screenshots have arrived!

I have managed to find some extremely high resolution images of Pauanui. I will momentarily upload some screenshots here to give you guys an idea of the capability of fsx. Just to give you an idea, this scenery is 2gb in size and is quite a small area. Watch this space...

Do you know who owns the imagery?

(That last shot is amazing -- I wish we could at least get roads that looked like that...)

EDIT: from looking at Google, the imagery belongs to the Thames-Coromandel District Council. You can ask them if you can use it -- that's what I did with Paraparaumu. I just needed to sign a contract which restricted the use to FS, but it was easy enough to negotiate.

If you need any tips about who to talk to about getting this, then let me know.....I don't have any specific contacts but know the things to ask/promise. I think you may be hampered by the fact you have obtained it from GE even though it is TCDC's imagery? You can always ask?

I'm sure there would be, but it just isn't going to happen in the next decade.

If you look at Google Earth, you'll see the problem -- this particular area is one of the the few which shows up in GE in high resolution. Less than 5% of the country is available in this resolution, and it normally belongs to the local councils. I know that I could get permission to use it, as I've done so for Paraparaumu, but, like Paraparaumu, I wouldn't be able to sell it. Even if the whole country was available, I suspect it would cost me about $100,000 to build the scenery, with no way of recovering any of this:)

HOWEVER, I will continue to point out that anyone with FSX can ALREADY access this imagery, for free, through TileProxy.

I agree that it would be too expensive to create scenery like this and unless I win lotto I won't invest money/time into it that would put me at a loss. What scenery I do make is, I feel, is better used by all the flight sim community which is why I would go the small distance to see if I can redistribute what I make. At worst I would only charge a couple of dollars for the physical dvd as it would be a nightmare trying to download huge amounts of data from the net. If the size is small enough I would upload. I believe this is the only way to experience ' as real as it gets'. There are copius amounts of aerial imagery for tonnes of places in New Zealand that have not been covered by developers at this stage and I think if everyone contributed what they can then we would have many new and exciting places to visit. The only thing to invest is a nice attitude to persuade councils to allow the imagery to be redistributed. Anyway it's an idea...see how it all goes!

Looking good mate, im sure in 10-15 years time, there will be some way to morph this into flight sim, and get great frame rates with our 16 core computers
