My Favourite NZ Screenshot of the Year

Post and comment on screen captures from the beautiful game here. Home of the monthly screenshot competition

Postby Charl » Thu Dec 18, 2008 3:41 pm

It's a thought that springs to mind this time of year, and Naki has already starteddown the road of reminiscing.
But let's see your very favourite screenshot (1 only) that you took in NZ in 2008.
It needn't be the best necessarily, just the one you couldn't erase from the hard drive.
And tell us why you like it.

Here's mine. ( Very hard as I have another, more favourite, but this one describes better in words)
Why?
The scenery, one of the best available in flight sim, RealNZ Marlborough.
The Dromader aircraft, ditto, by Tim Conrad
The photoreal repaint by Lucien Lie, transforming an already great model.
My own little paint tweak on the Rego, and Tui cowling for a bit more "Kiwiness"

Nice shot Charl - that has a real "Kiwiness" to it - you have reminded me that I must download the Dorm.

My Favourite NZ shot is my hang glider pic but I have plastered that around the net and people are probably sick of seeng it - my other favourite is this one taken off the coast of Tauranga (I have other favourites but they were taken offshore mainly in Alaska) - not sure why its my favourite - maybe its the clouds, the fact that I love Chipmunks, and perhaps its the photoreal paint job on an excellent model.

Remember your shot well Charl, from the time when we had an Ag-Cat themed monthly screenie comp running. Was impressed by it then, and still am now. Good show clapping.gif

My year's collection is fairly limited, so I've just had a scroll through my saved screenshot folder to try and decide upon a favorite.

I came up with this one from June:

Very much like one of Naki's top shots, this one stands out for me for it's simplicity- cloudless skys, peaceful countryside scenery, and the graceful metallic wedge of the DC3 gliding above it all... reminds me a bit of the default FS9 splash screen actually. Can't go wrong with sunset shots!

I did a good number of trans-Tasman flights this year, here's a screenie I like from an A320 Brisbane to Dunedin flight coming in over the southern Alps, the scenery aint that detailed but there's something about the balance of colours between the livery of the aircraft and the snow and water at ground level.

pales in comparison, but you cant go wrong with sun-rises either smile.gif

not one of my best shots, but its the only one ive got left from NZ,
idk, theres jsut something relaxing about it, its like the calm before the storm tongue.gif
maybe its the warm colours, and the flat clouds or something smile.gif

Come on guys, these are all contributions to Robin's 2010 calendar!
By now I'd have thought everyone would've sorted through their albums...
Great to see the shots above, and the insights with 'em.

Plane is Dromader M-18A by Tim Conrad for FS9, available at the usual suspects.

Nice shots as always everyone. I *blush* haven't done a whole lot of NZ screenshots this year, but this one would have to be my favourite. Pictured after completing a fantastic dusk flight on vatnz here: vataware

Fantastic scenery by Robin, and the magic Aeroworx King Air

This is the screenshot that I have chosen because it looks good and its in the Chatham Islands after a long early morning flight from Napier.

I quite like this shot I made a while back.

Robin's awesome Southern Lakes scenery
Freeware Tiger Moth from GJsmith.net
Active Sky X

No editing done but resizing.

It'd be interesting to compare this thread with one from 3 years ago -- for all our grizzling about the modern sim, it sure can blow ya socks off.

I wasn't going to add a shot, as my favourite shots tend to be quite quirky, and probably not too interesting to everyone. But I did do a shortlist, and a couple of things became apparent:
First, although I don't use it more than about 5% of the time, the 'World View Camera' thingie accounts for exactly half of my shortlist shots;
Most of my favourite shots are from Tekapo:) -- this is not so much because it was one of the last sceneries I finished, but because it was one of the few which was designed for FSX from the ground up.
Some of my favourites don't have messy aircraft cluttering them up!

In the end I couldn't decide, so I've chosen a Christmas Card instead...

I said it at the time: that scenery is too good for a flight sim, should be a walk sim.
Or a Christmas Card. biggrin.gif

I came across another one - I know, I said just the one, I am using Threadstarter's Prerogative
here.

Why?
It's all freeware (OK HTAI Cessnas are $15, but come on...)
Robin Corn's fabulous FS9 NZPP (BETTER than FSX because of the extra hi-res detail)
The Wozzastang with photoreal livery by Lucien Lie (aka yago9, one of my alltime favourite aircarft painters)
And, the AI in the background, which has absorbed a lot of my attention over some years - I do believe I painted FII.
Steve Jenks would've decorated the other one, and Nunner no doubt did flightplans.
So, in one picture, the efforts of half a dozen people from all over the place...isn't this a wonderful hobby?
