ATC window

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Hey,
is there a way that I can make it so that the ATC window only pops up when they're talking to me?

You can pop it on and off using the ` the first key of the numbers on your keyboard not the Num lock keys though.
I usually leave my ATC window off but when I hear them calling me I just hit that key and when the messages are finished I just hit the key again to turn it off again.

If you have the ATC window set up to automatically pop up, it can be a right pain in the rear end! Usually comes up while you're in the middle of a procedure or adjusting the autopilot etc. Wish it came up in a narrower strip across the top or bottom of the screen!

So I do have it invisible but every time any radio message to/from any aircraft is called it pops up. Is there a way to stop this happening?

Pretty sure you can turn it off in one of the settings windows.

if you have a second monitor I'm pretty sure you can undock the window and have it come up on the other monitor so you can just ignore it.

you dont need to undock it. i just realised that you can drag it across while in full screen mode (really helps with frame rates)

i never use atc anyway. i concentrate on properly flying IFR right now. sure, ATC is a big part of that but it gets in the way and gives me vectors when i dont want them

Pretty sure you can turn it off in one of the settings windows.

Go to settings in main settings under ATC untick the auto open but leave the show text ticked then use the first key on the numbers row of your keyboard to turn your ATC window on and off click the key ATC windows opens click key again and it closes
You can drag the window to the side and then when you close it and open it again it will come back up in the place you have got it dragged to.
You will still hear all ATC traffic but only need to turn it on when you hear ATC calling you and once messages have finished turn it off again.
By leaving the show text ticked you can open the ATC window and scroll through to see all messages from and to ATC.

Yeah. Done that. Pity that there's no way to make it pop up only when they're calling me.

On a side note, are there any programs like VOXatc that allow you to use a microphone? (just a hopeful thought)

yea thats default FSX, Kelburn here only has FS9 tongue.gif

i just downloaded voxatc (i thought it was payware but it was free somhow) it seems alright but it takes ALOT of tinkering and the language used is really intensive and quite confusing. it only works when a flight plan is loaded bacause it uses the flight plan to know altitudes and waypoints etc. plus that fact that my headset snapped sad.gif

Default ATC is just plain terrible - and while VoxATC is better given it allows you to use voice recognition, it is still very average for a lot of reasons.

If you want the 'as real as it gets' experience.......... download Squawkbox and signup to VATSIM!!

Check out this post regarding my thoughts about VoxATC vs default ATC vs VATSIM

http://nzff.org/forum/index.php?s=&sho...t&p=8241205

VATSIM can be as easy or as difficult as you like - there's plenty of tutorials and eager people around to help newbies out - you can login just to observe if you wish - the controllers are very professional and helpful - and we're always after more online pilots and controllers as it all adds to the experience.

Best of luck!!

I wish that I could do VATSIM but a problem to do with having Norton Anti-virus demo installed (although it no longer is) and then putting squawkbox on FS caused problems.

I.e. I could only see 1 aircraft in Vatsim. Also the servers didn't automatically show up as well asrandom figures showing up in squawkbox etc. Anyway do you think that I can fix this (I tried reinstalling it a short while ago but no fix...)

I didn't have any issues installing Squawkbox - but then again I don't use Norton. I did have a quick search and found that you need to list your own computer IP address as a trusted zone in Norton, in order to allow Squawkbox to access the internet and VATSIM servers. My IP refreshes each time I connect to the internet so you might be chasing your tail each time! There are also numerous posts on the VATSIM forum surrounding issues with Norton and Squawkbox - so you're not the only one. Apparently there's a MS Hotfix out there that addresses the problem but you'd have to do some deeper research. I did find these links and plenty of others which may put you on the right track..............

VATSIM Forum Link 2
VATSIM Forum Link 3 - Hotfix Info

Do a search on the VATSIM forums and see if you turn anything else up. I would say there is something left over after the Norton uninstall which is causing you grief. If you can't fix it my only other suggestion would be to format and do a clean reinstall of your OS and programs!!

Let us know how you get on!!

I think I may have got it working. Whens the next big vatsim event that you will all be taking part in? If there are lots of aircraft then I will see if I can see you all... I'm still getting the weird characters even after I re-did the registry (I think) and re-installed it.

I don't know if I'm going to make it this Sunday - I have a problem with my home cockpit and have had to do a reinstall of Windows because of a memory leak problem (Which hasn't fixed the problem so I'm running Memtest to see what the issue is!). sad.gif I'll let you know if I'm going online although I suspect there'll be plenty of planes on Sunday!
