FSX Vista problem

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby dbcunnz » Tue Apr 28, 2009 1:17 am

I have installed Vista Ultimate 32 and reinstalled FSX plus Acceleration. All the default aircraft are ok but most of the add-on aircraft load up ok but with no exterior paint.

The instruments are ok but some of the cockpit is also without paint.
Anyone got a fix for this or any idea what is not setup right.

looks like the aircraft isnt DX10 preview compatable.
Turn off DX10 preview and everything should be back to normal.

When I upgraded to Acceleration all the add on paints I had added to my aircraft dropped off. The textures were still there, but you had to re-input all the info into the aircraft.cfg files. Was a bloody pain in the backside! You would think the muppets would have tested this type of thing before releasing it. censored2.gif

This was tested -- I remember the discussion on the SP2 beta forum. I don't think that anyone was surprised that it wasn't changed, though, as the developers were not inclined to work on fixes for the minority, and as only 1 in 100 users would have addon aircraft, it would not be a priority.

I can understand their reasoning in this case -- someone would have had to write a tool to edit aircraft.cfg files which may have already been butchered by the users:) It was a lot easier just to supply a new cfg for the default aircraft. From memory, though, I think it was only a few default aircraft affected.

I agree - looks like DX10 preview is probably the culprit. I have yet to see any real advantage in using DX10. It also nobbles all my AI textures, so I just don't use it.

As a matter of interest - since the latest service packs for FSX, is there any reason to add FSAcceleration? I've successfully connected (over a LAN) a FSX/FSA machine to a standard FSX one for multiplayer.

Unfortunately for me, it did it to every aircraft I had added paints for. Positive was that at the time I only had a small HDD, so this was the best chance to get rid of unwanted paints.

I would recommend making a copy of the SimObjects/Aircraft folder before doing any upgrades.

Thanks Trev yes Turning off DX10 preview fixed the problem now I can test it to see if FSX runs any better in Vista than Win XP I will also be testing it with Win 7 x64.
I found there was very is little difference when running FSX between Win XP 32 and Win XP x64.
For testing I am using,
PSU: Corsair TX650W
Motherboard: ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe Socket AM2
CPU: AMD Athlon64 X2 6400+ (3.2GHz) 2x1MB Cache *Dual Core* 2000Mhz
Memory: Corsair XMS2 Dominator Xtreme Performance TwinX Matched - Memory - 4 GB ( 2 x 2 GB ) - DIMM 240-pin - DDR2 - 1066 MHz / PC2-8500 - CL5 -
Video Card: Asus GEFORCE 9800 GTX 512MB DDR3 EN9800GTX/HTDP/512M
Monitor: 3 ASUS VW223T - LCD display - TFT - 22" - widescreen run through a Matrox TripleHead2Go digital Edition
NaturalPoint: TrackIR 4 Pro
Joystick: Microsoft Sidewinder Force feedback 2

Now that I'll be very interested to hear about. I'm no great fan of Vista and have often considered "upgrading" to XP winkyy.gif ... but I'm keen to know if Win7 will be better.

Just a little hint, do not install to the default Program files directory as this directory is severly locked down even for users with admin rights. I had major problems with add ons like FSUIPC until I reinstalled onto a root directory I made myself

That happens to me but I'll just wait for about 20secs-1min until the paint loads. Works for me.

i have just taken the plunge and brought vista ultimate 64bit. it seems on my machine that things are running faster. it is strange, if i use DX10, i get better frame rates, minimal shimmering (which i am getting without DX10), but downside is i lose some of my aircraft, the dreaded grey out problem. but then i am trying to stick to DX10 compatiable a/c only, get better performance anyway.

my system is

AMD Phenom 9850 2.5ghz quad core
Gigabyte MA790FX-DQ6 motherboard
4 Gig OCZ 1033 ram
wd 500gig HD
9600gt 1 gig nivdea video card

i have never had a problem installing anything in the default folders, but then i turn off all user control and security features i can.

I'll try checking my framerates again. I didn't see much of an obvious difference - but then I wasn't being very scientific about it.

My problem is that I use WOAI Traffic - and I don't think any of the AI aircraft are DX10 compatible. Also - I tend to fly in/out of AKL a lot and Rob's scenery gave me a bit of a problem in DX10 (as it was written for FS9).

So ... I'm prepared to let my system run as a slide show ... but it's a very pretty slide show winkyy.gif

I am also using WOAI Traffic and with the DX10 they have no paint so what do you do have DX10 and just the default plus 1 or 2 other aircraft and no WOAI Traffic or chuck out the DX10 and enjoy more realistic flying with a better selection of aircraft and also have WOAI Traffic I know what I am doing they can stick their DX10 until they get it sorted to handle all add-ons and WOAI Traffic.

that has been a big sticking point for me too, i love having my traffic arround, but hate the default atc, and radar contact seems to slow the fsx sytem up alot, but then i am doing all my flying online, downside is that you don't have much, if any traffic or control, catch 22 i guess
