AN-12 Cargo Hauling in Africa

Post and comment on screen captures from the beautiful game here. Home of the monthly screenshot competition

Figure it's been a very long time since I posted any screenshots here, so might as well chuck some in here. This is a flight I did yesterday afternoon from Kotoka Int'l in the Ghanaian capital Accra to the city of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. The aircraft is in the livery of Goliaf Air, who are based in the West African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe. It is an FS9 model, but is fully compatible with FSX - the prop textures do look a little strange though, for which I apologise. There are 20 screenshots here so it might be a little hard on a dialup connection.

Smoky engine startup.

Airborne.

After repositioning out to sea, we're now heading north, back over Kotoka airport.

Approaching Lake Volta, a massive man-made lake in central Ghana.

VC view. I haven't done much flying in this AN-12 yet, but the cockpit layout is more or less similar to the AN-24 and 26 which I've flown a lot in various versions since the FS2002 days.

I have a terrain mesh and landclass file installed for all of Africa which makes a big difference as the default scenery is laughably bad here, perhaps even worse than the NZ default.

Cruising at FL190.

Still over Lake Volta, I believe this is the largest man-made lake in the world.

Passing overhead Tamale, in northern Ghana.

Beginning the descent about 55 miles out from Ouagadougou. As usual for sub-Saharan Africa there is a light haze at around 1000ft.

View from the position of the navigator.

Gear down and on approach to runway 04 left. This is where the landclass makes a big difference, in the default scenery these fields are just barren desert.

Hand flying this approach. There is an ILS for 04L but I'm doing the approach visually to save time.

Driving it down.

Over the edge of the city.

In the flare.

Smoking some rubber on touchdown. The AN-12 is pretty forgiving to land, you have to make a pretty bad hash of things to crash it.

Unfortunately this aircraft makes up for quite pleasant flying characteristics with rather poor ground handling, which makes this 90 degree turn onto the not exactly generous taxiway an exercise in throttle and brake juggling.

Offloading the cargo.

Closeup view of S9-BOZ.

That's the end, hope that was enjoyable. Any comments/compliments/criticisms welcome. smile.gif

Awesome!
The FSX landclass is really good looking.
What aircraft is that - AN12 is an example of aircraft designed while drunk!

Isn't it evident?? Boeing are my favourite aircraft.

P.S. that's is my real birthday but I wish to keep my real age secret to keep you all pondering.

The landclass is available on Avsim if you are at all interested. I've also got the FS Global terrain mesh installed, although this particular part of Africa is reasonably flat so the difference isn't too apparent, but in the mountainous areas it makes a massive difference.

Whoa the AN12 is one of my favorite machines but shots of it are so rare! Also its so nice to see a route like this - everyone (me included!) seems to be stuck flying around in North America or Europe! Nice to see some African aviation!! Well done and looking forward to more smile.gif

Can I ask where you got the plane?

It's in the file library on Flightsim.com. Search for the file called an12bk09.zip. As I mentioned it's intended for FS9, but as you can see I have it running in FSX with no problems whatsoever besides the very slightly off looking prop textures, so regardless of which FS you use it should be fine. Comes with a full VC, 2D panel, numerous different liveries, custom soundset etc. Very close to payware quality - definitely recommended. The same author has also done an AN-24 and AN-26 which are of equally high quality.

Stunning! Duly grabbed and installed smile.gif

Are those screenies from FSX? I get solid black discs - and no VC textures. I have Acceleration - would that be the cause (of both problems)? This is without DX10 preview (which I never use).

Hey Adam - Yes, my shots were in FSX, however I don't have Acceleration, and I'm only using SP1, so perhaps that could be why? When I installed it on a friend's computer (he has FSX Acceleration) I didn't have that problem, although I recall the prop blur looked a bit more solid than normal.

Edit - Actually, try installing the file an12bkzh.zip, also from FS.com. It's a slightly earlier version by the same authors, and it's actually the one I used for my screenshots, so perhaps you might have more luck with it? There's also an an12fxca.zip which apparently fixes some issues with the VC.
