Does anyone know about a Socata Tobago (or similar) aircraft painted in the old light blue and white Massey colours? There was one at Ardmore yesterday, flying really wide circuits- had what looked like some graffiti styled image on the tail and what looked like a rego of 'MBH' - although I'm sure it can't be. There was also a blank white Tobago in the circuit, although I've never seen it before...

EDIT: (for the second time today), I've found a picture of it, registered MBR, here:

The CAA website says it belongs to someone in Malaysia- anyone know it's history? It's got the most intriguing paintjob!

I'd almost bet money that he'll suggest the Sportcruiser or whatever it is tongue.gif

Good luck trying to buy a largeish number of brand new aircraft without spending millions...

And having 4 seats, 180 hp engine, G1000, light training aircraft that is in the non-micro class. Id say they did pretty well, also for the price they paid!

Indeed!
Any opinions on the Massey BAv course? That's another consideration for me, although it would involve moving south, rather than staying at home and studying at Ardmore

Without getting into a huge debate about it, I looked into it, and really decided against it. There are heaps of debates about it on PPRUNE, but IMO, it doesnt make you a better pilot, and it certainly costs a lot more.

If you were doing a degree, I would do it in something else, where you would have a guaranteed (or close to) job, if you were not able to fly. Such as Engineering, Business, Law etc.

New Zealand has the advantage of being able to get government funding for Diploma Courses. This is fantastic, as in Australia, you have to do a Bachelor of Aviation, to get the funding.

In the end, its the hours that count when it comes to employment. Maybe if you wanted to fly for a certain airline, that required a degree, like Qantas used to be, it could be necessary, but still, its a 3 year degree when you could be earning money and hours in 1.5-2.

I think you'll find that Air NZ all but require a degree for employment. As it stands at the moment people without degrees go to the bottom of the pile when it comes to recruitment. Want my source? Air NZ Pilot Recruitment Manager.

The BAv degree doesnt only mean you can fly. If you lost your licence / med you can do a year post grad diploma and you will have a BAv Management degree. Yeah it doesnt make you a better pilot, but it sure as hell teaches you more about flying than anywhere else, taught by some of the people that wrote the Pilot Books series (Navigation, Instrument Rating, and others). The flight test standards guide used by the CAA was co-written by our in house examiner. As with every place it has it cons, but hey who can go wrong with a brand new DA-40. My take is that why spend 2 years doing your CPL only to have to do another 3 years on a degree, when you can do it all in one.

Anyway thats my take, been the best decision I ever made.
