If you are completing your PPL through to ATPL do the Aviation Language Proficiency Test.
my company now requires it and 75% of carriers require it now world wide.
WOW i just scraped in i got level 4 lowest only 3 Captian's got level 6

A trip to Palmerston North (Yes THE Palmerston North where Eric was stuck for three years, for those Outrageous Fortune viewers), $100, and a conversation into a telephone which I could've had at home... and I walked away with a level 6 too.

One of the questions I got asked was 'What do you think about the requirement to take the English Language Test?'

nice work guys totally better at English than me good to see its out and about in NZ:lol:
we got charged 246 NZD for the FLE the company paid for it but there is a cheep course of 99$ too. i did is exam:) The L6PD is 99$
The LP6D if you pass first time its yours but if you fail its a 246NZ$ only sit LP6D once
for my level 4 i have to sit again in 3 year's

I recently did the test and scored 6 which is not surprising as I am a kiwi who has been speaking the language for 40 years. I believe there should be an exemption for born and bred New Zealanders, perhaps on the recommendation of a flying instructor. I have however had many experiences where I havnt been able to understand another persons transmission due to their poor English, in fact last month I had to ask someone to repeat their position 3 times as I couldnt understand them, on the third time they didn't even answer. This was inside a MBZ. So yes there is a need for this test, but they need to give some credit to people who already have a proven ability to speak our language.
