I love how some people are so against one or the other.. From a passenger's perspective good luck finding any huge differences.

Personally I found the seating in the Airbus really uncomfortable on a trans tasman route. Guess not so bad on domestic routes. Still way prefer Boeing as they have pedigree and I believe are a superior product. Purchase price is one thing, ongoing maint and reliability is another. Then again most airliners have a lifespan of 15-20 years or so.

Well it came as a huge surprise to me, I'll admit. I'd always seen the current A320s as a 'bump in the road' in the story of Air New Zealand's strong relationship with Boeing.

I can't really speak from a logical perspective and say "it's the right decision" or "it's not the right decision" because I just have no idea about all the factors involved in choosing an aircraft type. I can, however, speak from an emotive perspective.... YUCK!!! But I guess on the bright side, it makes me slightly less unhappy about not having domestic jet services here in Palmerston North now. At least we're only missing out on Airbuses.

And so another NZ aviation era (the era of the 737 wearing a Koru in NZ skies) comes to an end.

Well one thing is for sure - ANZ are in a very good position, as the article points out. They can buy at the low end of the cycle when prices are good and they are one of the few major airlines turning a profit thru the recession.

nah the only real 737 was the -200 series, now that was a nice sound, the modern 737 (-300 >) all sound the same, even the bigger boeing all sound like over grown hand dryers, with exception for the RR powered 767 /747 now that is a nice sound too,

the airbus to me sounds a little more growlie, with a hint of anger in it, hard to describe, but you always know when an a320 has flown over, where as at night i struggle to tell the difference between a 737, 767, 777 they all sound the same, unless powered by the mighty RR
In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.

All jet tubeliners are pretty boring to me (except the Concorde....give me a Spitfire anyday)...what I don't get is why is everyone is so down on Airbuses? 100s of airlines buying 1000s of A320s can't be wrong?

Despite the rumours that they were going to get 737-800s; you can see why Air NZ chose the A320 ..fleet commonality, they already have options on them from the last order, economics, price (thats a biggie), width of fuse- therefore wider seats and bigger freight capacity. Check the latest Herald article on reasons why.

737s sound better? ANZ clearly missed that factor out when they were doing their years of research for fleet replacement. laugh.gif I would've been keen on 737-700s or A319's just to see something different at the airport.

I would've prefered the 737 but it seems the A320 was the best decision for the airline.

Does anyone know what will happen with the 733s?

Air NZ have some of the newest 737-300s in the world, and they are very well maintained. I'm sure there are plenty of airlines ready to snap them up.

While I am a Boeing fan, as a passenger, I'm quite happy on their decision. Despite loving the 737 series, the seats are really crampt from about row 12 back, and I hope now Air NZ is getting aircraft that can carry more passengers, that they may leave more room between seats! From the passenger seat, as Tom said above, the only difference to me between the two is the different engine sound. smile.gif

Thankfully Pac Blue are still flying 737s around, and there are a few on the international routes, so we've not lost 737s just yet!

Waste of money? We're gonna need to have these A320s for 50 years before we see the effects of winglets on 1 hour domestic routes....

Edit: PPrune says the first 4 are going without the new winglets, as they wont be certified yet.

actually not, because i don't think that airnz will use new aircrafts for domestic+old for international, i think new deliveries(i mean wingletted) will go for international services=where their efficiency is higher(as routes are 3+hours), and current series(OJ*) will be used for domestic
