SAA 747 Stadium Fly By

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby ardypilot » Sun Feb 21, 2010 5:10 pm

I recently watched the new Invictus movie about the 1995 rugby world cup in South Africa, and loved the scene where the South African Airlines pilot does a real low flyby over the Ellis Park stadium prior to the final match of the tournament.

Seeing as the movie was based on real life, I did a quick search online and found out that this event did actually occur, and was wondering if anyone knew where to find photos/video footage of the original event? Thought this would be the best place to ask!

Cheers smile.gif

Sounds exactly what some flight simmers do ..... maybe we should get the world to check out the Cake Tin in Wellington , i'm sure we can get 20 747s doing the very same thing ... I would hate to be the air traffic controller on that multiplay ohmy.gif never saw that , good find Mike

Great stuff. But can you imagine trying to pull off something like that for the world cup in Auckland next year. No chance - the Mayors would not be able to agree for starters !!

Tower guy just has to divert all inbound traffic over the stadium flight path at 1000ft for a hour due to weather or something on the normal path that day ..lol

Not that original really, seem to remember Eden Park and a flyby of sorts a good 14 years before 1995, altho on a budget (Cessna?), with homemade special effects New_Zealand_etc.gif

LOL - damn good point! I'd forgotten all about that one myself...course, I was only 10 at the time! Actually that particular flight is just crying out for a mission in FSX...after all, there's already a couple of "flour bombing" missions there already laugh.gif

We got a Huey to drop off the game ball in a Super 14 match in Wgtn, it was Anzac day. Very cool, although after they put the ball on the ground and the chopper took off, the rugby ball when flying along the ground from the down wash biggrin.gif
