Rudder problem

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby rocky289 » Tue Mar 16, 2010 8:39 pm

Just bought some Saitek rudder pedals to use with my Ch Products flight yoke.
Seems to be a problem with the right rudder.
It works perfectly in the windows game controller setup & calibration, just not in FSX.
At this stage I don't know if there is a fault in the controller or the setup.
There may be a clash somewhere but I can't find it.

check the fsx default assignements, it may have picked up something else for the rudder
In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.

The unit is a used one bought on trademe, sold as, in new condition.
I have contacted the seller re the problem but have not heard back as yet.
I have been over the asignments several times & can't see anywhere it may be clashing with the yoke.
The only other flight sim I have here is an early Combat FS which I installed to try.
With all the asignments at default it was exactly the same problem. So I am thinking it is a hardware problem.
When asigning the control to rudder, if you push RR nothing shows, push LR & it comes up.

In any setup CPs (Windows, Saitek or FSUIPC) do you have that axis set as "centred"? Looks like you may have it set to "linear" <??>.

You could be right but I don't recall seeing that setting anywhere.
Could you maybe point me in the right direction.

1. Disable Autorudder: FSX / Settings / Realism / Flight controls.

2. Calibrate controls: FSX /Settings / Controls - then go on from there.

Put all sliders to max under Advanced Controls with controller type set to your Saitek Rudder Controls. (dont know if that will work but just a guess)

Ok I'll walk you through so you know where it comes unstuck.

1/ Autorudder disabled, check

2/ Calibrate controls: when I click on calibrate it opens a "Game Controllers" window. If I then go to properties I can check both brake & rudder axes which work perfectly. There is no calibration available.

3/ Put sliders to max, check.

4/ Go to control axes / set L brake, check
/ set R brake, check
/ set rudder axis, (now here is where it come unstuck) Highlight Rudder axis, click on change asignment, right pedal does nothing, only left pedal brings up the word rudder in the asignment box.
When you go to your aircraft, the rudder is on full right. Push the num 5 key & it centres ok but just touching either rudder pedal sends it full right again.
I have increased the null but it has the same effect, just have to push the pedals further.
You can pull the rudder left with the L rudder pedal but it goes back to ful right when you take your foot off.

Try not setting the brake and see if that helps. I'm not sure if FSX handles axis brakes, but FSUIPC will I think

What do you mean "work perfectly"? Are you seeing some visual indication that the rudder is deflecting (the the full extents) in both directions at this stage?

Tried that. I will try the FSUIPC later when I get a chance.

Yes, in the properties of the game controller window.

Finally got this sorted.
From Saitek re this problem.

Hi,

Unplug the controller, click Start>Run, type regedit and click OK. In the Registry Editor browse to the following folders in order:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKEY_CURRENT_USER if using Vista)
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
MediaProperties
PrivateProperties
DirectInput

And delete any folder starting with VID_06A3. Plug the controller back in, move it fully a couple of times and see if that has fixed it.
