Was there much of a disruption? I'm too young to remember but Dad was an Ansett Dash 8 Captain then and has told me of how they flew past Ruapehu while it was erupting.

I'm NOT too young to remember, I'm actually too old to remember .. LOL .. but from a NZHerald Article on Saturday...

QUOTE
Eruptions of Mt Ruapehu in 1995 to 1996 caused havoc in domestic airline schedules with multiple airspace closures over large parts of the North Island, extending to Auckland at one point. The Civil Aviation Authority reported engine and windscreen damage to at least one, and possibly two, aircraft.[/quote]
