Had a surprise when walking around the centre of St. Petersburg, Russia. Saw this helicopter operating from one of the islands in the city, and had to investigate. Turns out that it was a Russian Mil Mi 8P helicopter operated by Baltic Avaition. It was doing 10 minute scenic trips over St. Petersburg for 2000 Roubles or about $90NZ. It was possible to stand VERY close to it, notice the spectators in the photos. I might post a video of it later as well if anyone is interested.

Makes a changing from watching Robinson R22s at Wanaka!

Smooth landings.

Great pics thanks- I have always had a fascination with Russian hardware...Im hoping to do some travelling and see some more of it.

How are you finding travelling in Russia? Fairly stress free?

Magic stuff HT.....keep posting. Can you imagine OSH(NZ) allowing people other than police/military , to get that close to a chopper that size...in the hover.

Travel safe HT

Imagine trying to take a video standing that close, the downdraught was strong!! No problems with the photos in St. Petersburg, even of Russian submarines and warships. All very relaxed and easy. The helicopter was busy over the weekend, flying almost every hour during the afternoon.

smooth landings.

I'd go for a flight in it for that price! biggrin.gif I see the MI-8s from Taupo coming into Ardmore occasionally, they really are amazing, and as they are landing the rotor RPM always looks so slow to be keeping such a big aircraft airborne!
