Hi Gary...

Looking at approx. $1/day before GST + domain hosting..... It adds up quickly.

Alex

A $1 + GST a day isn't to bad for what we get where else would you get a brilliant forum like this for less We have 1,426 registered members work that out how much it would cost each member yep it would be about 35 cents each a year.

How long these companies will be allowed to continue milking this fat cash cow I don't know. In Europe, bandwidth ... data caps etc. are almost unheard of. Just not enough competition here in NZ. These companies can do what they like.

I host a fair few sites here in NZ and it really is NOT cheap. I also host sites in the US (cheap, no data caps etc.) but their support is generally pretty shocking. At least here I can just pick up a phone and speak to a real human!

I suspect NZFF is a pretty heavy site in data transfer (all those luvverly screenshots!!!) and we'd all hate for it to become *less* popular, so we're probably "stuffed", as it were. Though "shafted" is probably more accurate laugh.gif

Actually, on checking the invoice there's a charge for the extra domain which we no longer use, so the actual cost -- once I get it sorted -- should be $30 per month = $360 less 20%, which totals $288. Plus GST of course. (Plus the domain name renewal, which does seem a bit high, but since it is only 40-odd dollars not worth the time to shop around and change it to save $10.)

The hosting seems pretty ok to me, having done some serious research when my own hosting came up for renewal earlier this year. Sure, we could probably do it cheaper, its that kind of market, but no doubt most of us know at least one other forum which suffers from budget hosting, such as lousy speed, or running out of bandwidth at the end of the month. If you want good support, and most of all a speedy local server, then you can't go for the cheapest option.

The main consideration for me is speed -- it's no good if the forum slows to a crawl during peak time, because that's when it is used the most. I wouldn't want a forum where we have to tell members to try it at off-peak times, such as 3am, just to get a good response...

I actually pay twice this amount for the windowlight site, mainly for the extra bandwidth requirements. It's a pity that the NZ hosting market doesn't have concessions for local traffic, as I understand that most of the cost is related to overseas data. Still, a small price to pay for the benefits of living so far away from the rest of the world:)

Well said ! The site is always quick to load and when you look at the speed and the data with the screenshots and the reliability $1 per day is a pretty good deal. Thanks for clearing that up smile.gif
