Warbirds Over Wanaka (sim)

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Javis » Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:14 pm

Heya Kiwi's

I stumbled in here ( nice place ! cool.gif ) because of a file i just downloaded, 'wan01.zip'. The thing is that i'm looking for Warbird AI models. In the readme of the zip there's a link to download 'Duxford Warbird AI' which seems not to be working anymore. The zip file is created by Charl du Toit and i couldn't help noticing his presence here... smile.gif

So Charl, would you possibly be able to help me find this 'Duxford Warbid AI' package ?.... Your zip file being from 2006 i figure that it is ment for FS9 and so will the Duxford Warbird AI, right ? I'd still like to try to make them work in FSX as there's just about nothing around regarding warbird AI models for 'the last of the many'... Truckloads of airliners and GA aircraft, and very nice too with WOAI i have to say, but i'm waiting for years now to see the first easy on the fps Spitfire or P-51 AI to arrive in our beautiful virtual blue yonder... Why oh why....

So this Duxford Warbird AI sounds pretty good to me, can you help me, Charl ? rolleyes.gif

Thanks a lot for any tips ! ( other hints/tips about warbird AI are very welcome as well of course! )

Cheers,
Jan

Hello Jan, nice to see you here!
Yes unfortunately the Duxford package disappeared from the usual sites...
It's around 150 MB so too big to email around, alas.
If memory serves, it was hosted here for a time, perhaps admin can dig out a link?

To be honest, the models probably don't stand up too well nowadays.
I think they are mostly reworked CFS2, and would have the usual issues with FSX.

Four years down the road, with better computers, I find I can use as many flyables in FS9 as needed, for AI!
Certainly enough to populate an airshow...let me plug my last Wanaka clip here,

Ironically this probably would not work for FSX, given the higher demands there.

I hope this helps a little, if all else fails I can snailmail a CD!

Thanks very much for your reply, Charl ! cool.gif

Hot Dang! That video is amazing ! But that's done with flyable models and FSRecorder, right ? Some jolly good flying there ! And always nice to hear Carl Orff's Carmina Burana smile.gif

I have never tried any CFS2 port-overs in FSX. Will there be more issues with these than the usual with FS9 ports ?...

Yes, i tried flyable models as AI too in FS9 and FSX as well via the excellent GA Traffic program. Just what i'm looking for, lined up in between a P-51, Corsair and Spitfire waiting for an ol' Vampire to land... Fantastic ! But the significant loss in fps was just too high a price to pay, eventhough i always used the option of the GA Traffic program to reduce the texture size of the various models.

I have a much better puter now compared to a few years ago when i tried that and i'm almost sure that with FS9 i could now get more than satisfactory fps using GA Traffic as AI warbird provider but i found myself not even having looked at FS9 for maybe more than a year so i finally decided to say goodbye to the old girl and just go with FSX.

Using normal models as AI in FSX is out of the question, atleast with the system i'm running at the moment.

Thanks a lot for your offer to send a CD via snailmail. Highly appreciated ! cheers1.gif

But what about 'Yousendit' , Charl ?.... It's free to try and much easier. If not too much trouble you could check it out here : https://www.yousendit.com/

My email address is jan.visser1(at)chello.nl

Thank you so much on forehand, Sir ! notworthy.gif

Yeoow there, Ian, thanks much for your welcome message and PM, appreciate it ! cool.gif

Always enjoyed flying around virtual New Zealand a lot in FS9 and do so in FSX as well. Got a lot of the Godzone stuff in FS9 but have to catch up in FSX. I have your Coromandel scenery for starters. It's lovely, thanks very much ! thumbup1.gif

WOOOAAAHHHH!!!! Thank you so much for sending the files,Charl, awfully kind of you ! cheers1.gif

It works too, you know ! biggrin.gif

I have only installed one package, see what will happen. So far i've seen a P-51 and a P-38 on the tarmac. I think the models don't look bad at all ! If the're all like these two i'd be very happy !

It's been a while since i used the GA Traffic program, i'll have a serious look into it again to get a fair number of my newly aquired warbird AI squadron sitting on the aprons and hopefully start their engines. Going to be great fun i'm sure !

Say, Charl, the 'wan01.zip' that i've got here only works with FS9, not FSX, right ? I do have the FSX version of that beautiful scenery for Wanaka.

Well, i don't know how to thank you, Charl, it seems that i finally got what i always wanted, a very nice collection of warbird AI to play around with and still keep a satisfactory fps.

You have certainly made my day, my friend, thanks a million again !! notworthy.gif

Cheers,
Jan

OK I'm glad that came together for you, Jan.
The models were great at the time and it's good to hear they still do the job.
(I remember originally at Duxford they brought my computer to its knees, all lined up as they were along the taxiway.
That was 2 generations ago, though...)

To answer the question:
The flightplans will work in FSX but not the AFCAD.
I don't recall what parking is available in the stock FSX Wanaka so there may be some strange or missing aircraft movements.
Stick 'em in and see!

If anyone else wants these files they are here for another couple of weeks:
