Aviation Books

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby HercFeend » Tue Jun 29, 2010 9:35 am

I thought this might be a useful resource to have. Please try and stay on topic so it doesn't get blown out with clutter and chit chat, thanks.

I'll get the ball rolling:

Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying - Wolfgang Langewiesche See here. Old, c.1940s, but still a good read and relevant.
' Have you ever notice that the experts who decree that the age of the pilot is over are people who have never flown anything? In spite of the intensity of their feelings that the pilot's day is over I know of no expert who has volunteered to be a passenger in a non-piloted aircraft..'

Been thinking about reading that one.
Quite enjoyed Takeoffs and Landings: The Crucial Maneuvers & Everything in Between by Leighton Collins

http://www.downunderpilotshop.co.nz/Takeof.../asa-to-ldg.htm
http://www.amazon.com/Takeoffs-Landings-Cr.../ref=pd_sim_b_6

He and Wolfgang were mates.
Half the photos are taken in NZ (including the cover).

well these are aviation books, but more about the machines and people that fly them in battle,

both by ed macy, hellfire and apache, really good reads about the machine and the man flying them, mainly ed macy.

In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.

My Fav:

ChickenHawk by Robert Mason

About his incredible story of being a Huey pilot in the Vietnam War.

Definately worth a read.

I cant provide any links Im sorry, but some that i have read over the past year:

Flying the big jets: Stanley Stuart (all you want to know about flying a 747)

The first and the last : Adolf Galland . Good read.....a view from the otherside.

Test pilot : Neville Duke . Great book about test flying in the 40's and 50's.

Sea Harrier over the falklands: Commander "Sharkey" Ward DSC,AFC, RN. Great book, lots of tech stuff.

Carrier Pilot. Norman Hanson . About a royal Navy Corsair Pilot in WW2 .

All worth a look......Im always on the look out for these types of books....i cant read fiction at all.
I do have a big collection of these types, and Im quite happy to lend them out if your interested. Most of the WW2 stuff is out of print now, so when i see anything i grab it, and Ive found some real little treasures over the years.

Cheers
