Mt Ruapehu Eruption Video 95

Was flying over the crater lake today and was wondering what it would look like errupting. Had a look on youtube and came across this!

wow, amazing stuff. You know, we think we are so smart....but theres not a damm thing we can do to stop that....makes you feel kind of small (i speak for my self)
Any sign of activity on the lake ?.....thanks for posting that dude....scary, but interesting

Impressive , I do like blowing things up , seeing this remind me another natures whoopings , i hate the ocean in it being cold , wet .. i,m not a fish ,i,m a bird , this person had a photo on his wall showing the English coast line , a very large print and man you could just about fall into it and drown , it showed the raw power off the sea .

Steam was coming off the lake when I went up yesterday. I personally have an interest in volcanoes..GNS site reports an increase in the level of CO2 and SO2 coming from the lake and also the lake level has dropped down a bit..who knows when the next big erruption may be? Amazes me how close those chairlifts on Turoa ski field get to the crater lake..

Haha the memories. My mate and I packed up his old 76 Escort and hoofed it down just to watch it blow. Escot, beer, eruption and destruction. God I'm a Westie...

I would have loved to seen her blowing up in 95 with my own eyes.. I'm sure we will all see her do it again sometime in the near future though..

Cool pics- what aircraft were you in?

I was flying around the Central NI yesterday also and heard a few bayflight regos on 119.1, you may have even caught me in OAT at Tauramanui.

Also, just cos I can't be bothered opening up my maps right now- what sort of airspace is it around the top of Ruapehu? Wasn't it way above the freezing level up there? Keen for a gander myself sometime soon!

Hi Andy, I was in the Cherokee, ELX
Went controlled VFR 8,500ft direct to Mt Nguruhoe then the lower limit for control is 9,500ft over the National Park so just changed to National Park Traffic, above Ruapehu there is a circle covering the main summit area with a lower limit of 11,500ft so you can stay uncontrolled over the mountains quite easy, highest we got up to was 11,500ft but was mainly cruising around 9,500ft around the three cones, then had a suction failure lol but carried on since we could quite easily fly without an AH and DI, was awesome flight and went home via Taupo- Mt Tarawera.

Only took us 10 or so mins to get from mountains to taupo as well lol

Yea freezing level was 4,500ft so quite cold up there but we didn't experience any icing so was sweet as and I only encounted slight amounts of rotor action as we flew on the lee ward side of Nguruhoe, might have heard your call sign on information but didn't real listen for any particular call signs, yea there were quite a few Bay Flight guys around the area.
