Naked - outside - in Chch in the middle of winter. Now thats tough !! I'm pretty used to seeing Hercs and Orions like that, from all my years at Woodbourne. Before SafeAir had the major servicing contract the planes were test flown naked, then flown to ChCh to be painted. These days SafeAir do that here as well.

Great photo of the P3. Yes lots of MEK and ever present smell of paint stripper. Thankfully I never had to do a paint strip. I only spent 8 months in 4 hangar on Orion groups when I was a mech in 1987, but I was based at Woody later in my career. 1998-2005 Training school, 2006-2008 as SAP (maintenance computer system) support , so it was still common to be around the aircraft from time to time.

What about yourself ??

I was with AMDF (The Mod Squad) mid 80s doing the Iroquois com/nav upgrades or Kahu protoypes. Then exiled to Welly NCOIC Kahu pubs for my sins.

The photo is taken at Woodbourne. The group servicings are an airframe structural inspection and ovehaul carried out every 5 years. These were done by RNZAF personnel at No.1 Repair Depot at Woodbourne in #4 Hangar. Full paint strip, then about 3 months of intensive work, then they were test flown naked and once all was ok, flown to ChCh for painting. After that, it was back to Whenuapai and back on the line all shiny and new!! Due to increasing budgetary pressure and manpower cuts, this work was out sourced to SafeAir in the mid 90's. They do all the painting in the hangar at Woodbourne, although I believe its highly illegal and they will either be forced to build special painting area to comply with regulations or again start flying the aircraft to the paintshop at ANZ ChCh !!

This pic of my Basic Engineering course was taken mid 1986. We were very priviledged to be able to wheel the spitfire out to use for our course photo. Not long after it went off to the RNZAF Museum which opened the following year. I'm hiding in the group somwhere. Too long ago and hardly even recognise myself anymore !!
