Gliding

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby s0cks » Mon May 17, 2010 10:58 am

Was doing the tutorial for gliding in FSX last night, as I had never done it before. It was actually pretty good fun! That was until FSX decided to CTD sad.gif Bit worrying as it seems to do it quite often.

Anyway, was just wondering what the good gliding spots are in New Zealand? I'd love to try them out!

sOcks, are you meaning for real gliding or the sim? Regardless, as far i know one of the best places is down at Omarama (NZOA) S 44 293 E 169 592.
A lot of world records have been set from there .I dont know about the north island, but Im sure they have good areas as well. Also some nice ridge waves around here (NZCH) with the wind pushing up over the port hills.

Im sure someone else will have more info for you.

Cheers

Tauranga, NZPP, NZMA and NZQN. There might be some more but not sure.

Very very cheap , even an introduction flight , until Canterbury Gliding Club moved to Holarata. i clocked eight hours , the sailplane is quite amazing .

Introduction to Soaring
Swedish Championship soaring course

These are the only missions for gliding, I have beaten both of them and earned the Peregrine Falcon award for the Swedish Course which is to achieve the best time for the mission. You will find that there are different types of thermals and the bigger the updraft the better also you can get some good speed on those ridges. In MP there is also two MP Soaring races which is quite good. One is Austria and the other is in Nevada. I suggest you start by doing the tutorial again as it earns you an award.

Omarama! the best! (*cough* in real world) you can get a little hut on the airfield near the runway, and park your glider outside tongue.gif

Some things to add to the fun.

Some really good freeware gliders for FSX and FS9 http://www.fsglider.de/p_e.htm

Cumulus X to add ridge lift and improve thermals over default http://www.forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?showforum=230 Note you only need cumulus X.

A winch for more fun Winch xV1.0 http://www.luerkens.homepage.t-online.de/peter/

and a tow plane that can be set to fly in circles instead of straight ahead http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6497

Have fun...

What is the time required to beat in order to get the Peregin Falcon award!?!?! I read it was 1hr10mins........... I've done it twice now in just under 1hr8mins but never get the award!?!?!?!

This is the Program I use for my Gliding Expeditions in FS 2004...>>>

http://www.simviation.com/fsgliders_29.htm

"FS2004 Whole New Zealand Soaring Scenery".

Special Clouds form around you, which give thermal lift when you are close to them!

(Stick it into your Add-on Scenery Folder, and "activate" it within the Library)

Also useful to search for "Variometer" Gauges to fit into your Glider, for an "audible" indication of lift or drop!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Nav...and a fan up at the pointy-end...for added security/peace of mind!... winkyy.gif ...!

Go for it!!! There's nothing quite as satisfying as using your skill and the elements to sustain flight and denying messrs Shell/Mobil/BP et al a few shekels in the proicess biggrin.gif Yes, Omarama would be the place of choice but just go along to your nearest club and you will be assured of a warm welcome.

Ah yes, fond memories of flights in the easterlies doing high speed beats along the Port Hills in the inner harbour and missions across to Mt Herbert after exploiting the ridge lift above the Road Tunnel. Happy days.

I'd love to build a model of my old ship - Slingsby Dart 15 - for fsx but frankly I wouldnt know where to start sad.gif ...... (and I havent found any freeware versions)
