I don't think so as a lot of pilots I flew with in the RNZAF wore corrective lenses!! I do know that colour blindness is an issue though......

Really. You're not allowed to fly if you need glasses in the RAF. I must admit I'm not 100% on the policy once you're serving but you certainly can't join if you currently require corrective lenses. I doubt 'combat' pilots are allowed to wear glasses at any stage, for obvious reasons.
' Have you ever notice that the experts who decree that the age of the pilot is over are people who have never flown anything? In spite of the intensity of their feelings that the pilot's day is over I know of no expert who has volunteered to be a passenger in a non-piloted aircraft..'

The eyesight requirements are strict for pilots. Although some did wear glasses, including some combat pilots, most required glasses after they were operational. Not sure what the entry requirements are for pilots, but for other aircrew, corrective lenses were ok. There is a limit as to how bad eyesight is allowed to be. I know, as I was just outside to be accepted as a Flight Engineer.
I'm not sure of the status of laser surgery as there are some Air Forces who allow it and some who don't. The same applies to contact lenses, but I think they are now acceptable for non pilot aircrew.

RAF Eye Sight

Obviously this is for RAF and not RNZAF but as you can see their standards are pretty clear cut - 6/6 uncorrected vision. No correction permitted. However as you can see from the column below that that Army and Navy pilots can have 6/12 uncorrected as long as corrected their vision is 6/6 - this just illustrates, if one was needed, that Army and Navy pilots are in fact substandard! winkyy.gif

RNZAF

Step Up - Pilot

// JOB REQUIREMENTS
You must be 17 years or older and have a minimum of 18 NCEA Level 2 credits in English, maths and a science subject, preferably physics. Eyesight restrictions apply. - Give them a call and ask what they are......

when I went through, no one had eye sight problems - when 800 people apply and they take three courses of 12 then any abnormality is an easy cut.

something that caught me out was hearing, they are very strict on it being near perfect. It certainly held me back because I didn' know I had a problem and it kind of shattered a few dreams. I have just passed a class 1 medical audiology test with a noted problem but within CAA criteria so its not as strict in civvie street. I knew a few pilots that wore glasses, don't know if they had always had them or needed them once they were flying a few years.
