Recording software and editing?

Was just wondering what you all use to record and edit with?

Currently I'm using fraps but not liking the split videos it makes after the filesize gets high, but I do like the simplicity it has. Are there any others out there that are similar but will record longer videos?

Also the editing software, I need something that can compress the video file size down to something manageable for a youtube upload, but not going to decrease the quality. At the same time, being able to join the videos I've done with fraps so far, a little editing (adding titles/credits etc).
I've been using Moviemaker for a little while and it just doesn't cut it anymore, however I love the simplicity of it which had kept me using it rather than move on to something better. That time has come though, where I need to do more with the videos.

Any advice? I'd rather keep it freeware or a cheap-ish program I could buy. I've looked at Vegas but can't find the right one, and they all look expensive.

Any tips?

If you purchase the full version of fraps you can record as long as you like in the one capture , ive used just about all the pro versions of movie makers starting with adobe prem and ending on Sony Vegas ,Vegas to me is the best and easiest to navigate for what i need it for and with the right plugins can do most of what the real pros can with other movie editing tools , there is a squeeze tool call Sorenson Squeeze ,though all this is cash and im unsure of anything free that would do the jobs aswell as these tools can ..

I still swear by FRAPS, I've never had it split files. At what size does it split them? I've never recorded longer than 10 or so minutes in one take, though.

I'm just playing with Windows Live Movie Maker, which has just been updated. This is as simple as, or simpler, than Movie Maker, but has built-in Youtube upload etc. The update now has the ability to change the speed easily, so my 1/4 recordings can be sped up to normal again.

Here's a sample upload, 5 minutes work to render and upload within Live MM.

Fraps is starting a new recording once the current one reaches 3.9gb, roughly a 2:30 min video. Already have it recording at half-size and a lower FPS, is there a file I need to edit to stop it creating a new video file?

That's a limitation of the file system -- you can't have any file bigger than 4GB unfortunately.
